The City of Oakdale is seeking a skilled and motivated Building Inspector to help ensure the safety and quality of development in our community. This role involves inspecting residential, commercial, and public projects for compliance with state codes and local ordinances. The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise and strong communication skills to work with contractors, property owners, and residents while supporting Oakdale's commitment to safe, sustainable growth.

Under limited supervision, this position conducts building inspections to ensure local building codes and other related code standards are met for community life / safety needs. The City may hire candidates at any step in the pay schedule based on qualifications and experience.

The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following :

• Work collaboratively with other staff, residents, and contractors to provide excellent and responsive public service.
• Review residential building permits, plans and applications for compliance with building codes and standards, as well as erosion / sediment control.
• Knowledge of state building codes, city ordinances and zoning requirements, knowledge of construction practices and materials.
• Inspect construction methods and materials for compliance with building codes, contract specifications and industry standards.
• Conduct on-site comprehensive inspections of sites and structures to ensure compliance with existing building codes, city ordinances, and life safety regulations.
• Issue correction orders regarding code violations and issues stop work orders in instances where violations are severe, no permit has been issued, or present danger to the public.
• Explain and interpret building codes, other city ordinances, and contract specifications to contractors, property owners, and the public upon request.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive records and creates reports based on observations made during inspections.
• Provide concise code interpretations for those circumstances in which there is a difference of opinion on the specific code provision.
• Perform rental housing inspections on all licensed rental units, coordinate with owners and managers for correction, and overall program administration as needed.
• Provide timely and relevant information to supervisor and other city staff.
• Work with State of MN Labor & Industry to identify unlicensed contractors and contractors that perform work illegally.
• Represent the city in a courteous, responsive, and professional manner in all interactions.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Assist Code Enforcement Officer as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibility : Supervision : This position either (a) carries out work with minimal supervision (i.e., the supervisor sets only goals, priorities, and deadlines; and the employee uses guidelines that cover most situations), or (b) follows the supervisor's directions on methods and desired results but modifies methods to resolve unforeseen situations and problems. Building codes must be followed, ordinances and zoning must be followed, how something is achieved can vary on the job site. Impact : Work affects a wide range of professional projects or administrative activities of the organization, influences internal or external operations, or impacts many people. This role assists with office work, processing permits, contact with the public, phones, emails, and other contacts throughout the city.

Surroundings : This position is partially in the office and partially in the field inspecting construction sites. Moderate Risk Exposure to outside environmental conditions and / or exposure to noise, dust, fumes, gases, chemicals, oils requiring special mitigating precautions or protective gear, and / or working in close quarters, narrow aisles or passageways, and / or work around moving mechanical parts.

While data are being accessed, this position should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason.
