Public Education Specialist

Closing Date : November 5 2025

Schedule : 8 : 00 am - 5 : 00 pm Monday - Friday (occasional evening weekend and holiday hours required)

SUMMARY

Under general supervision and direction of the Fire Chief or designee performs a variety of duties both in the office and field. Specific duties may include organizing and delivering fire and safety educational programs to the community keeping and reporting statistical data information and coordinating efforts within the Fire Department and with associated public safety agencies.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May exercise some management of volunteers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Assist in determining the fire and life safety priorities of the community and the development of strategies and goals to stop and prevent disasters and emergencies; evaluate the effectiveness of community prevention programs by collecting and analyzing relevant data and statistics to meet community needs.
• Design and develop education and community prevention programs in fire and life safety and emergency management; design and develop course materials and / or lesson plans for all public education programs.
• Organize the delivery of education and community prevention programs to children and adults in schools businesses and other community settings.
• Develop and maintain business relationships with and participate in collaborative partnerships with professionals from the community involved in fire prevention and life safety education.
• Assist in creating and maintaining a budget; seek out new funding sources and grants.
• Act as a highly visible interactive and positive advocate for community fire safety and public education in the community; assist in other areas as assigned .
• Prepare reports and document activities and maintain appropriate files.
• Assist in promotion of educational courses events and programs as necessary through social media
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education : Associate degree in education or public safety or related field. Four years of relevant work experience may be substituted in lieu of education; however an Associate degree is strongly preferred.

Experience : Five years of teaching and developing fire prevention and life safety education curriculum or related field preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing duties employee typically handles office equipment; frequently sits or stands for long periods of time; some lifting bending and carrying of items under 50 pounds is required. Standard office environment includes reaching sitting standing talking hearing and listening. Generally comfortable working conditions; some stress resulting from ongoing deadlines and interaction with community groups individuals department and division heads and fire department teams and members; noise level in the work environment is usually minimal; occasional evening weekend and some holiday work may be required. Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
