Position : Instructional Assistant (Behavioral Intervention)
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the direction of an assigned administrator, assist assigned certificated school team member or administrator in providing a variety of advanced behavioral management and instructional support techniques and strategies; work with individual or small groups for students with behavioral, social, and / or emotional needs, which may include those on the autism spectrum; collect and maintain data on student behavior; complete a variety of clerical and supportive tasks; attend and participate in student progress meetings; perform other related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Assist assigned certificated school team member or administrator in providing instruction to students in an assigned special education and / or general education behavioral intervention and transition classroom or program.
- Support in the implementation of lesson plans developed by the certificated school team member; assist with group or one-on-one instruction in a variety of subjects or activities; administer, monitor, and score a variety of assessments; differentiate materials and explain instructions.
- Assist the certificated school team member in monitoring, supporting, and instructing students who have intense social, emotional, and / or behavioral challenges; observe and respond to the behavior of students according to approved District procedures; collect data, provide input, and assist support team in reporting progress regarding student performance which may include : Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), Functionally Equivalent Replacement Behavior (FERB), and Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Utilize behavioral methodologies which may include Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Social Skills, CheckIn / Check-Out (CICO), Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), Token Economy and other interventions that support and reinforce Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS).
- Perform a variety of clerical duties such as collecting, maintaining, and entering data, typing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers and recording grades; assisting in keeping attendance; preparing and maintaining student records and files, as necessary.
- Assist students with developing self-help, social-behavioral, and interaction skills, as assigned.
- Communicate with certificated school team members regarding the individual needs of students; provide input regarding student progress.
- Provide support to the certificated school team member by setting up work areas, displays, and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, and distributing and collecting supplies and materials.
- Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information according to established guidelines.
- Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring lunchroom, recess, and playground activities; accompany children on field trips as assigned; assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures.
- Participate in meetings, professional development training, and in-service training programs, as assigned.
- Perform first aid as needed; assist with medical or health-related concerns as needed.
Requirements / Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.Must have an AA degree or higher or at least 48 semester units of General Education or pass an Assessment Test.One year of experience working with children in an educational, therapeutic, or childcare setting.Completion of specialized training in the area of instructional services, psychology ,or guidance is highly desirable.REQUIREMENTS FOR CONSIDERATION INCLUDE :
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid First Aid and CPR certificate.Knowledge of First Aid and CPR; general concepts of child growth, development, and child behavior characteristics.Knowledge of strategies used in managing and motivating students with behavioral, motivational, and social-emotional needs.Knowledge of behavior modification techniques with or without the presence of a certificated team memberKnowledge of Individualized Educational Program (IEP) goals and objectives for special education students.Ability to assume responsibility for supervising students.Ability to be flexible in making quick changes in daily lessons for individuals or total groups.Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and concise records and reports.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and others encountered in the course of work.Licenses / Certificates / Special Requirements :
A valid Class C California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.Work Environment
Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditionsMay work in a classroom environment or a student’s homeThe noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.May work with verbally or physically aggressive behavior of students and be subject to behaviors such as kicking, spitting, scratching, biting, and profanityMay be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids
