Purpose / Summary
Make a real impact by helping fellow students succeed in CCD’s High School Diploma Program as a Civics embedded peer tutor—gain experience, build leadership skills, and support our community.
- HSDP helps adult learners earn their high school diploma in a supportive, inclusive environment. The program focuses on real-world skills like civic engagement, critical thinking, and preparing students for college or career success.
- As an Embedded Civics Tutor, you’ll be a key part of the team—helping students stay motivated, understand course material, and feel confident in class. You’ll build leadership and communication skills while making a real impact and gaining hands-on experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop students’ critical thinking skills through guided learning and best tutoring practicesContinuously develop and improve their own tutoring strategies and techniques, and commit to ongoing professional growthWork with people from diverse backgrounds such as individuals with a disability, racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and LGBTQ communitiesAdhere to confidential information policiesAttend Civics class(es)Facilitate small group exercises and discussionsGuide hands-on practice and provide feedback during in-class activitiesOffer student perspectives in class discussionsProvide one-on-one support for students needing extra helpWork with students online via video conference (WebEx, Zoom, Teams) for online tutoring appointmentsAssist students in using course-related software and technology
Qualifications
A solid grasp of American government, civic processes, and social justice issues (completion of PSC 1011 is required
Basic knowledge of platforms like D2L, WebEx, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook—or a willingness to learnClear, respectful, and confident speaking and writing skillsAbility to explain concepts, lead discussions, and support different learning stylesStaying on top of class schedules, tutoring sessions, and follow-ups with studentsComfort using online tools for virtual tutoring and classroom supportAble to adjust your approach based on student needs and classroom dynamicsWork well with instructors, students, and other tutors as part of a teamSpot learning challenges and help students work through themBalance tutoring responsibilities with your own coursework and commitmentsYou care about helping others succeed and are willing to meet them where they areYou value diversity and create a welcoming space for all studentsYou show up prepared, follow through on commitments, and take initiativeYou’re open to feedback and always looking to improve your skillSupplemental Information
