The Planning and Development Department and the Public Works department are actively seeking one (1) Associate Engineer.

This is professional engineering work performed under the direction of a Professional Engineer in designing and coordinating the construction of municipal projects. The work requires an understanding and application of the theories principles and practices of civil engineering which are gained through a combination of specialized training and education and considerable related on-the-job experiences. Contacts require skills in understanding and influencing others which are important in coordinating projects with outside parties resolving complaints and enforcing regulations. The professional work is covered by clearly defined policies and principles underlying the activity where the incumbent is required to exercise judgment in accomplishing objectives. The engineering work involves a variety of situations requiring analytical interpretive evaluative and / or constructive thinking in new situations facts and circumstances. Work is performed in an office environment with some field inspections where there are some risks and hazards but they are known predictable and controllable. Operates personal computers motor vehicle survey equipment camera and standard office equipment. The physical demands consist of driving sitting climbing standing and walking to inspect construction sites. The work is performed under limited supervision where assignments are subject to established methods and techniques and are reviewed for quality and adherence to established methods standards and policies.

Examples of Work

• Designs civil engineering / site infrastructure and maintenance construction projects.
• Performs professional engineering calculations.
• Prepares and obtains permits.
• Conducts pre-bid conferences and advisory meetings to develop bid terms conditions and specifications. Submits projects for bid process.
• Consults with state and local agencies and utility companies on project designs.
• Compiles data prepares monthly reports and makes oral presentations on design and construction projects.
• Inspects construction sites to determine conformance to design specifications.
• Writes inspection reports for compliance with design specifications.
• Operates a motor vehicle to conduct field inspections.
• Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonvilles competencies.
• Performs related work as required.
