The Manager, Data Engineering leads our data engineering team in designing, implementing, and maintaining robust data solutions in support of Allied’s Cloud Analytics Platform (CAP). The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise in data engineering with strong leadership and project management skills to drive innovation and deliver business value through data. This role offers the opportunity to work on diverse and challenging projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams to leverage data as a strategic asset for the organization

  • Job Duties and Responsibilities :

Leadership, Strategy, and Operations (40%) :

  • Manage and mentor a team of data engineers.
  • Set goals and objectives for the team and monitor progress.
  • Provide guidance and support to the team and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide regular feedback to team members.
  • Allocate and track Data Engineering resources, demand, and capacity.
  • Develop and execute a data engineering strategy aligned with engineering best practices and the organization’s long-term goals.
  • Create and deploy Data Engineering standards and best practices for the department.
  • Oversee and manage data engineering suppliers, creating a plan to internalize more work.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture focused on continuous learning and improvement.
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new team members.
  • Database Design and Development (25%) :

    Manage the people, processes, and technology that enable the Data Engineering team to :

  • Design and document Conceptual, Logical, and Physical data models in support of the business objectives, including entity-relationship diagrams, data dictionaries, and metadata.
  • Enforce data integrity rules and constraints to maintain data accuracy and consistency.
  • Perform data quality analysis and validation to identify and resolve data errors.
  • Document data standards, naming conventions, and best practices for database design and development.
  • Monitor database performance and identify opportunities to optimize data access and retrieval.
  • Work closely with database administrators to implement indexing strategies, partitioning, and other performance-enhancing techniques.
  • Act as trusted partner in evaluating a move to an enterprise, domain driven data model.
  • Collaborate with database administrators, software developers, and other stakeholders to implement data models effectively.
  • Communicate the data model design to technical and non-technical audiences, explaining complex concepts clearly.
  • Infrastructure Management (20%) :

    Manage the people, processes, and technology that enable the Data Engineering team to :

  • Design and maintain data storage and computing infrastructure within Allied’s Cloud Analytics Platform.
  • Implement and manage cloud-based data platforms, such as AWS and Snowflake.
  • Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure uptime and reliability.
  • Implement security measures to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Plan and execute capacity scaling strategies to accommodate growing data needs.
  • Data Pipeline Design and Development (15%) :

    Manage the people, processes, and technology that enable the Data Engineering team to :

  • Design scalable and efficient data pipelines to extract, transform, and load (ETL) data from various sources.
  • Implement robust data integration solutions that ensure data quality and consistency within the Cloud Analytics Platform.
  • Optimize data processing workflows to improve performance and reliability.
  • Stay updated with the latest technologies and best practices in data engineering to drive continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and deliver solutions accordingly.
  • Qualifications (Education, Experience, Certifications & KSA) :
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, Business Analytics, Information Systems, or a related field required.
  • 5-7 years of related work experience required.
  • 5+ years’ experience in data and dimensional modelling / in a data engineering role required.
  • 3+ years of people leader / management experience required.
  • Experience with : Informatica IICS, Snowflake, AWS preferred.
  • Extensive experience with SQL required.
  • Experience with Visual Studio preferred.
  • C# preferred.
  • Experience with data modelling software required (Idera or Erwin a plus).
  • Experience working with cloud data capabilities and data ecosystems.
  • Experience using one or more project methodologies (ie : Agile, Waterfall, Scrum, DevOps etc) as a key tool in your role.
  • Experience with statistical analysis / modeling tools such as R or Python, and BI tools such as Power BI or Tableau preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability working with real time or batch data integrations to integrate data from disparate source systems into data lakes / data warehouses.
  • Experience build / maintaining CI / CD pipelines.
  • Experience with technical solution delivery and management of support processes.
  • Ability to develop technical and business strategies.
  • Experience with and ability to manage and drive several projects simultaneously to completion, balancing conflicting priorities when needed.
  • Sufficient coding experience to be able to communicate with and guide engineers.
  • Requires strong business and technical acumen.
  • Strong analytical and product management skills required.
  • Strategic mindset with demonstrated experience in implementing data frameworks and driving continuous improvement.
  • Previous experience working in a start-up or on product development is a plus.
  • Demonstrated Critical Thinking Skills.
  • Familiarity with a modern data stack (Glue, Boomi, dbt, Fivetran, Snowflake, AWS, etc.) a required.
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently.
  • Familiarity with Object Oriented Analysis, Project Management, Business Analysis Methodology, and the SDLC.
  • Experience in the insurance or financial services industry a plus.
