Substation Apprentice Electrician Transmission Maintenance

Job Summary

The Apprentice Electrician is a training position to develop the knowledge and skills a Journeyman Electrician will need to maintain system substation facilities. The Apprentice Electrician is trained in and will be responsible for all the activities in the maintenance of substations including : Power Circuit Breaker Operation, Maintenance, Repair, Troubleshooting and Timing; Equipment Print Reading; Installation and Commissioning of New Substation Equipment; Large Power Transformer Maintenance and Repair and Gasket Preparation; Plumbing, Carpentry, Rigging, Sheet Metal, Calibration, Machinist, and Welding; Perform Live Line Work in Substations by utilizing Hot Sticks and Gloving methods.

The starting salary will be based upon the conditions of the Memorandum of Agreement Wage Schedule between Georgia Power and IBEW Local Union Number 84, which includes an increase every six months until you max out in your job classification and a cost of living increase every July.

Job Experience and Education :

• This is an entry level position. Experience with electrical and mechanical systems is desired.
• The majority of the work of an Apprentice Electrician is the mechanical maintenance of large electrical equipment.
• An understanding of both mechanical and electrical maintenance techniques is a plus.
• Two-year technical degree in Electronics, Electricity, Electronic Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, Electrical / Mechanical highly desired.

Pay : This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement (union contract) between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional, however the starting salary is governed by the union agreement. Current starting pay for the Substation Apprentice Electrician is $5724.00 / month.

Training : Apprentice Electricians will undergo an extensive training program including classroom, skills, and on-the-job training. The training program lasts approximately 3-4 years. Upon successful completion of the training, the employee is eligible to bid on Journeyman Electrician positions as they become available.
