Assistant Controller Job Description
Position Summary : The Assistant Controller is a key member of the team, working with the Plant Controller to lead the plant's accounting functions. The position offers a unique opportunity to drive profit improvement initiatives, ensure compliance with financial policies, and breathe life into an entrepreneurial spirit by encouraging new ideas, overseeing exciting processes like annual budgets, and undertaking special projects.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Financial Management & Reporting : Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting. This includes managing monthly closings and analysis, preparing weekly estimates and annual budgets with the management team, and preparing and posting journal entries for month-end. The role also involves heavy ad hoc reporting and analysis using Excel and other systems, and producing weekly, monthly, and yearly sales reports. You will also support all amounts on the plant balance sheet and ensure it is "audit ready" at all times.
- Operational & Process Management : Review, develop, and enforce financial and operational processes. You will oversee internal controls and audit readiness, working with both internal and external auditors to provide timely responses. The Assistant Controller will also oversee collection efforts to minimize risk and improve KPIs.
- Leadership & Team Development : Supervise and develop accounting staff. The role includes teaching and providing guidance to accounting personnel, applying both positive and corrective feedback, and resolving conflicts. You will be measured on your skills in motivational techniques and subordinate development.
- Special Projects & Innovation : Lead profit improvement initiatives, and undertake special projects. This role encourages new ideas and is evaluated on creativity and participation in advancing the business through new and innovative ideas. The individual must be autonomous and able to effectively handle simultaneous projects.
Required Education and Experience
Undergraduate degree with a focus on accounting or equivalent experience.Three years of relevant experience with similar responsibilities.One to three years of general accounting experience, as well as experience with payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.Experience in a manufacturing environment and or agricultural business is preferred.Skills and Abilities
Technical Skills : Must be computer literate with MS Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Intermediate Excel skills, including formulas and pivot tables, are required, and advanced Excel skills are preferred. Experience in SAP and physical inventory management is preferred.Communication Skills : Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential. This includes the ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial statements and business periodicals, and to write reports and business correspondence. The ability to effectively present information to groups is also necessary.Mathematical & Reasoning Skills : Ability to calculate figures, evaluate financial alternatives, and interpret financial trends. The ideal candidate can solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.Personal Attributes : Must be a self-starter with strong organizational skills. The role requires superior time management skills and the ability to manage multiple issues concurrently. The individual should be a deadline-driven crisis manager who demonstrates high emotional control under adverse conditions.Work Environment & Physical Demands
The role is in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.The employee may be required to work overtime and weekends on short notice.Travel for conferences and training is required.The ability to wear safety glasses, ear protection, and steel-toed shoes is a requirement.
