Street Medicine Patient Registration Specialist

SUMMARY :

Responsible for processing registration and discharge of street medicine patients, appropriate placement of patients with providers, verifying insurance benefits, and making financial arrangements to ensure maximum reimbursement to Los Angeles Christian Health Centers. Responsible to collect all data needed to report to managed care health plans and assisting in making PCP changes. Will operate in both clinic and street medicine settings, working alongside street medicine health professionals to conduct registration processes in the field. Will also be responsible to coordinate transportation options, i.e. taxi, ride share for patients and also operate LACHC’s mobile medical van as needed. Must have excellent computer experience and customer service. Demonstrate Christ-like behavior and attitude in all job duties and responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include :

• Greet all patients, community members and other staff in street medicine settings in a welcoming and trauma-informed manner.
• Maintain patient flow at street medicine events and conduct outreach by coordinating closely with street medicine clinical staff.
• Register all patients per registration protocols and collect all documentation.
• Scan required documentation into eClinicalWorks per protocol when back in the office.
• Follow protocol in informing RNs or providers immediately when clients are presenting urgent symptoms such as : chest pain, shortness of breath, acute abdominal pain, etc.
• Reviews and verifies patient coverage of insurance and financial data and computes the charges to be paid by the patient.
• Collects co-pays or deductibles prior to the patient being seen by the provider using established policies and procedures.
• Conducts PCP changes, insurance eligibility and linkages to enrollment and retention services as needed.
• Provides information on DPSS, GR, SSI and other benefit-related information to patients.
• Collects relevant health plans required demographic information and other data to report to health plans monthly.
• Maintain and prepare daily scheduled appointments as needed.
• Maintain a high accuracy rate when entering appropriate patient information into eClinicalWorks.
• Schedule follow-up appointments, if needed, before client departs.
• Assist in calling for consult notes, hospital records or diagnostic imaging and results, as needed, when directed in street medicine settings.
• Assist providers with clerical duties as needed in street medicine settings.
• Manages necessary LACHC-related paperwork for clients.
• Schedules appointments for clients, both in-clinic, appointments at LACHC like dental, optometry or mental health and specialty appointments and sends reminders, working closely with street medicine case managers.
• Works closely with medical staff to coordinate transport of patients to medical appointments using transportation services (e.g. Uber Health, Butterfli Transport).
• Drive LACHC’s mobile medical van as needed.
• Manages inventory of taxi vouchers and bus passes used for patient distribution.
• Assist in maintaining office supplies.
• Other duties as assigned.

COMPUTER SKILLS :

LANGUAGE SKILLS : English and Spanish fluency preferred.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as totals, proportions and percentages.

REASONING ABILITY : Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE :

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Three months to one year of related experience and / or training, or equivalent of education and experience. Knowledge of medical procedures and practices helpful. Computer experience required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to carriers of contagious diseases such as TB, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
