Job Title Embedded Counselor - Athletics Division Student Affairs Office Department University Counseling Center Position Category Staff FLSA Exempt Pay Range Salary Range $80,000 / year Fund Source State Support Job Summary The Embedded Counselor for athletes serves as the initial point of referral for mental health services for student-athletes and as a liaison to the Counseling Center. The Embedded Counselor will provide individual counseling, clinical assessments, group counseling, and crisis intervention to student-athletes. The Embedded Counselor develops and / or modifies treatment / performance plans, maintains confidentiality, professional boundaries, and practices competently, as defined by the State of Maryland.

In addition, the Embedded Counselor conducts outreach and workshops on performance management and on mental health topics, periodically attends sports practices and home events, conducts periodic needs assessment, and provides education and training to student-athletes and Athletics staff regarding athlete mental health. Job Duties Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Providing comprehensive psychological services to Morgan State University Students (50% in the Athletic department and 50% in the Counseling Center).
  • Provide individual, couples, and group counseling
  • Provide consultation to coaches and sports medicine staff
  • Conducting outreach presentations and psycho sessions on mental health topics for a diverse population
  • Rotate on-call services with other counseling staff
  • Ability to provide tele-therapy services to clients
  • Able to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Promote wellness and team building
  • Provide campus support, as needed, during times of campus crisis and a psychological emergency.
  • Ensure client confidentiality and maintain ethical and legal guidelines as required by the State of Maryland.

Requested Minimum Qualifications Educational :

Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Mental Health, or Sports Psychology from an accredited University.

Experience : One year of experience working in a college / university counseling center is required. Candidates must be licensed in the State of Maryland; however, license-eligible candidates will be considered. Other Preferences for Consideration Candidates with a Doctoral Degree in Counseling Psychology or in Clinical Psychology will be given preference.

The preferred candidate should be licensed to practice Psychology or Counseling in the State of Maryland. However, license-eligible candidates will be considered. If license eligible, the candidate must become licensed in Maryland no more than one year from the date of hire. The preferred candidate should also :

  • Have two years of experience working in a university / college counseling center
  • Have experience working with an ethnically and culturally diverse client population
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Have the ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the developmental needs of a traditional college-age population and an understanding of the aspects of students’ intersecting identities.
  • Possess an aptitude for using the Titanium EHR software system competently and an interest in the integration of technology in Counseling.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Psychological and Counseling Theories :

  • Understanding of various therapeutic approaches (CBT, DBT, Person-Centered, etc.)
  • Awareness of mental health conditions (anxiety, depression, trauma, etc.)
  • Crisis intervention strategies and techniques.
  • Developmental Psychology :

  • Knowledge of the stages of human development, especially as they pertain to adolescents or specific groups the counselor is embedded.
  • Cultural Competency :

  • Awareness of how culture, race, ethnicity, gender, and socio-economic status influence behavior and mental health.
  • Sensitivity to diversity and understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized groups.
  • Legal and Ethical Standards :

  • Understanding of confidentiality, mandatory reporting, and ethical guidelines in Counseling.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws that apply to counseling in specific settings (e.g., schools, organizations).
  • Mental Health Resources :

  • Awareness of available community resources, support groups, and external services that may be relevant to clients.
  • Understanding of referral processes when a client needs specialized care beyond embedded services.
