The Instructional Designer III oversees the development and maintenance of a portfolio of courses within an academic program, ensuring alignment with pedagogical best practices and institutional goals. This role independently collaborates with faculty and subject matter experts to design and develop innovative online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning experiences that foster meaningful engagement with course materials, instructors, and peers. The designer facilitates the learning design process by crafting clear, measurable learning objectives and building accessible, interactive content within the TAMU Canvas environment. Responsibilities include curating active learning materials, designing collaborative activities, evaluating open educational resources and third-party media, and recommending appropriate technologies to enhance instruction. The Instructional Designer III also provides guidance on copyright and fair use, and partners with SMEs to plan and integrate media assets such as video, audio, and graphics into course content. The Instructional Designer III applies project management best practices to guide learning design projects from initiation through completion. This includes monitoring timelines, anticipating and resolving obstacles, adjusting deliverables as needed, and maintaining regular communication with the director to ensure transparency and alignment. The role supports the director in tracking project activities and outcomes, ensuring course content remains up to date and responsive to student feedback. The Instructional Designer III also manages a digital asset library, maintains strong collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and stakeholders across various communication channels, and delegates tasks to team members and student employees as appropriate to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality outcomes. The Instructional Designer III provides mentorship and support to Instructional Designer I and II colleagues, contributing expertise in course design, quality assurance, learning technologies, and multimedia strategy. This role models a commitment to continuous learning by staying current with emerging trends in online instruction, pedagogy, accessibility, copyright, and open educational resources. Under the supervision of the director, the Instructional Designer III also leads internal staff training and development initiatives, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented team environment. The Instructional Designer III develops comprehensive guides, resources, and training materials to support faculty in applying research-based best practices across teaching modalities and within digital learning environments. This role also delivers targeted training on the learning management system (LMS) and associated instructional technologies—including Zoom and other third-party tools—to enhance faculty proficiency and confidence in designing and delivering engaging, technology-enhanced instruction. The Instructional Designer III plays a key role in ensuring quality assurance across all learning design projects by applying accessibility standards, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, and evidence-based instructional practices. This position tracks course quality using a standardized rubric established by Mays Business School and collaborates on initiatives to evaluate and implement improvements to learning design processes, policies, and guidelines. Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Four years of experience in instructional design or related experience in K-12 education, higher education, adult learning and literacy, or training and development. Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and instructional technologies. Ability to use Canvas and basic programming relating to digital learning environments (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.). Proficiency in Adult Learning Theory, instructional design models, course design, accessibility, Universal Design for Learning, and trends relating to online education. Ability to apply instructional design theories, principles, best practices, and current trends in teaching and learning to the design and development of innovative, high-quality online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning content in a higher education environment. Experience applying quality design standards such as Quality Matters, OLC Scorecard, or a similar rubric. Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects and work collaboratively with others. MS, MA, or PhD degree in instructional design, instructional technology, curriculum & instruction, UX / UI design, or a related field. More than five years of experience in instructional design or related experience in K-12 education, higher education, adult learning & literacy, or training and development (at least 2 years in higher education). Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with faculty and subject matter experts to design, develop, and implement innovative, engaging, and accessible online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning content that aligns with quality standards in the higher education environment. Expert knowledge of course design, accessibility, Universal Design for Learning, adult learning theory, and trends relating to online education. Proficiency in Canvas and basic programming relating to digital learning environments (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.).
