Senior Digital Engineer, Systems

Location : Atlanta, GA

Position Type : Full-time, Exempt

THE ROLE :

The Senior Digital Engineer, Systems is recognized as a subject matter expert for the design, implementation, and maintenance of storage systems, server environments, and digital media applications as well as their associated linear and file-based video processing systems and associated equipment. Additionally, they are responsible for the configuration and support of external processing systems including services hosted in other Encompass facilities as well as within Public Cloud environments. Equipment encountered in this position includes, but is not limited to physical (bare-metal) and logical (virtual) servers and computer systems, operating systems and applications, storage arrays, and other ancillary equipment. Additionally, the Senior Digital Engineer, Systems will need to work with locally and remotely hosted software applications including encoding, transcoding, packaging, and VOD creation software, as well as Encompass internal software applications.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Design and implement, document and maintain digital media systems and services including video ingest, transcoding, packaging, delivery and storage, with understanding of network protocols and interfaces.
  • Scope includes systems infrastructure supporting both broadcast and digital video delivery solutions, including live and on-demand (VOD) products
  • Undertake corrective and preventive maintenance activities necessary to maintain highly available digital media workflows and systems
  • Be available as a SME on complex technologies, systems and workflows while maintaining up-to-date knowledge on emerging technologies and industry trends
  • Support streaming protocols such as UDP and RTP Multicast, RTMP, HLS, DASH
  • Liaise with third party vendors (e.g. equipment vendors and software providers) during fault resolution and new platform evaluations
  • Maintain detailed documentation and drawings as required to address growth and maintenance activities in support of operations teams
  • Provide users and clients with professional, courteous, and timely technical support
  • Design and integrate Dev / Ops tools and frameworks to automate workflows
  • Participate in rotating on-call shifts to provide 24x7 digital engineering support
  • Mentor and help guide mid and junior level digital engineers.

REQUIREMENTS :

  • Hands on with IP Multicast, especially PIM, IGMP, Anycast and MSDP implementations
  • Proficient in MPEG-TS, HLS, MPEG-DASH
  • Experience with multimedia frameworks such as FFmpeg, GStreamer or QuickTime
  • Solid working knowledge of virtualization with tools like OpenStack and / or VMWare.
  • Hands on experience with transcoders and packagers such as Titan, Elemental or Harmonic.
  • Familiar with Origin Servers and CDN solutions such as Akamai
  • Expert knowledge of Linux and Windows system administration
  • VOD metadata grooming and SCTE insertion systems management and troubleshooting
  • Technical knowledge of setting up and configuring servers (Windows and Linux) and storage systems (SAN and NAS)
  • Professional experience using Bash, Perl and / or Python scripting
  • Experience with integrating Dev / Ops tools / frameworks such as Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ansible
  • Hands on experience with NAS storage solutions such as Isilon or Gluster

    • ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS :

  • Working knowledge of core cloud services and infrastructures such as AWS and Azure
  • Experience with web servers such as NGINX, IIS, Tomcat
  • XML and JSON manipulation
  • Has worked in an Agile environment
  • Knowledge with video monitoring solutions such as ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana)
  • Technical knowledge of file-based video processing systems such as Vantage or Carbon Coder

    • EDUCATION and / or CERTIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years of systems administration (RHEL / CentOS preferred)
  • A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g. electronic engineering or software development) would be preferred

    • The nature of this position requires the employee to work in a highly technical environment.

    Ability to work at a fast pace and at times when the business requires, the need to work evenings and weekends.
