Accountant - Law Firm Experience
Location : New York, NY (Hybrid : 4 days in office, Fridays from home) Full-Time | Salary : $90,000-$110,000+ (commensurate with experience)
A prominent law firm in New York is seeking a highly experienced Accountant to support the firm's Controller across key finance operations including billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general accounting. This is a fantastic opportunity for a proactive, detail-oriented professional with law firm experience to take ownership of vital accounting functions and grow within a dynamic, team-focused environment.
What You'll Do :
Accounts Receivable / Billing
- Process and manage client billing, ensuring accuracy and timeliness .
- Review and edit pre-bills per attorney instruction and client guidelines.
- Identify and resolve errors in time entries or disbursements.
- Prepare final bills and cover letters; post bills upon approval .
- Follow up with attorneys regarding billing timelines and collection issues.
- Maintain special billing arrangements and monitor trust balances , WIP , and unapplied cash .
- Reconcile client accounts and send reminders as needed.
- Conduct bank reconciliations and daily deposit tracking.
- Generate and analyze billing and collections reports .
Accounts Payable
Code and process invoices, expense reports, and check requests.Reconcile vendor statements and resolve invoice discrepancies.Prepare batch check runs and respond to internal / external inquiries.Maintain and organize accounting files and assist in improving the A / P process.General Accounting
Assist with GL entries , account reconciliations, and monthly financial reports.Support the Controller in the day-to-day operations of the Accounting Department .Provide administrative support to ensure accuracy and organization of all financial documentation.What You'll Bring :
10+ years of accounting experience , preferably within a law firm or professional services environment .Solid background in billing, A / P, A / R, and general ledger accounting .Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills .Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (QuickBooks, Elite, Aderant, or similar platforms a plus).Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is highly preferred (not required).A proactive attitude and eagerness to grow with the firm as it continues to expand.This position offers the opportunity to work directly with the firm's Controller and play a key role in shaping the financial efficiency and operations of a thriving legal practice.
