Volt is immediately hiring for Mechanical Engineer – Utility Infrastructure Projects in Newport News, VA 23601

What are the main functions of this role?

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to support utility infrastructure projects from concept through completion. This role involves planning, design, bidding, construction oversight, commissioning, life-cycle asset management (LCAM), and project close-out. The ideal candidate will have experience in mechanical and electromechanical systems and a strong understanding of utility distribution and facility infrastructure.

You will be doing :

  • Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and develop High-Level Feasibility Estimates (HLFEs).
  • Create comprehensive project plans including justification, scope, deliverables, risks, budget, and schedule.
  • Collaborate with design agents, technical experts, and stakeholders to ensure performance and constructability goals are met.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards for all personnel involved in project execution.
  • Maintain adherence to local, state, and federal regulations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Select and manage qualified suppliers to ensure safe and high-quality project execution.
  • Review and validate contractor deliverables including designs and technical specifications.
  • Oversee financial aspects of projects including budgeting, progress tracking, and payment approvals.
  • Monitor project schedules and manage critical path activities.

This is a 12-month, Full- time- Contract to possible extension opportunity.

You should have :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (required by Newport News Shipbuilding).
  • Minimum of 9 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree, 7 years with a Master’s, or 4 years with a Ph.D.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Proficiency in SAP for work order creation, operations management, and procurement tracking.
  • Prefer :

  • Strong knowledge of utility distribution systems and facility infrastructure.
  • Experience developing design criteria, contract documents, and execution strategies.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and vendors simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with multi-trade coordination (electrical, mechanical, excavation, telecom, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards including :
  • National Electric Code (NEC)
  • ASME B31.1 and Section IX
  • Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code
  • International Building Code
  • ADA compliance
  • NFPA standards
  • City of Newport News ordinances and permitting processes
  • Experience with construction lifting operations and crane safety.
  • Pay Rate : $54.23 - $ 68.79 per hour.
