General Summary

To operate the heavy park maintenance equipment for a variety of park maintenance activities including mowing, fertilizing, trimming trees, and related operations; perform semi-skilled park maintenance tasks and participate in Urban Forestry Program.

Supervision : General supervision is provided by the District Park Supervisor.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct and Rules of Behavior as outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.

Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in city and department attendance policies and procedures.

Operate heavy park maintenance equipment including a tractor with mower, chipper, water truck, and various other equipment for a variety of park maintenance operations involving the mowing of grass and trimming of trees for City parks, medians, and rights-of-way.

Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; pick up and deliver heavy equipment as required; operate a variety of park maintenance tools including power tools; perform general maintenance duties including refueling, and lubricating parts; make minor adjustments as necessary.

Participate in the Urban Forestry Program; participate in City-wide tree planting, and various other tree programs.

Participate in a variety of park facilities maintenance duties including the clearing debris from parking lots.

Pick up litter from grounds as needed.

Drive to and from destinations as assigned by Supervisor.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

  • Participate in a variety of plant maintenance and landscape duties including trimming trees and shrubs, pulling weeds, mowing and edging lawns, raking recreation areas, planting trees, watering plants and trees, sweeping, and clearing fallen trees from the public paths and walkways.
  • Assist in park inspections to ensure the safety of the public and park facilities; note possible safety hazards or causes of injury; perform general maintenance and repair to park facilities as required.
  • Maintain work, time and material records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

Education :

  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Experience :

  • Six months of increasingly responsible experience performing maintenance work involving the operation of park maintenance equipment.
  • Licenses And Certificates :

  • Possession of a valid drivers license.
  • Work Schedule :

  • Monday - Friday; 7 : 00 a.m. to 3 : 30 p.m.
  • Required overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Physical Requirements / Work Environment

Basic Group Life Insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year. The following voluntary benefits are available to full-time employees : Supplemental Life, AD&D Insurance, Cancer Insurance and Long-Term Disability Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) : All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the TMRS. TMRS is a qualified tax-deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides 2-to-1 matching contributions. Other benefits include Social Security, Tax Saver Program (Section 125 Flexible Spending Account), Deferred Compensation Plans, Direct Deposit, Paid Holidays, Paid Vacation, Sick Leave and Personal Leave.
