Conservation Technician, Objects (Temporary, Full-Time)

Conservation Center

Reporting to the Senior Conservator, Objects, the Conservation Technician, Objects will support the Conservation Center by assisting with a variety of exhibition, preventive conservation, and preservation tasks for the museum’s permanent collection. The role will focus particularly on artworks being prepared for installation in the David Geffen Galleries. This short-term position is dedicated to assisting with the installation of the Damascus Room.

Responsibilities :

  • Assists conservation staff with the remounting of a decorative wood-paneled interior, including disassembly of wood components from an existing armature and attachment to a new custom armature.
  • Adheres wooden panels to secondary wooden supports and mechanically attach them to a metal framework using bolting hardware.
  • Casts and / or sculpts replacement elements and fabricates detachable inserts using wood, paperboard, or epoxy putty.
  • Performs structural repairs to original wooden elements and inpainting, under the supervision of a conservator.
  • Completes written and photographic documentation and maintains a detailed inventory and tracking system.
  • Duties, responsibilities and activities may change or new ones may be assigned at any time.

Benefits :

  • The expected hourly rate for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $35.00, subject to change.
  • Qualifications :

  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, plus two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in craft and / or fine arts techniques.
  • Experience handling three-dimensional artworks.
  • Woodworking experience, particularly with hand tools and adhesive application, preferred.
  • Experience operating power tools and assembling metal hardware preferred.
  • Familiarity with metal fabrication desirable, but not required.
  • Ability to work at heights and to move, lift, or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation.
