Salary : Pay starts at $26 per hour

Mission : Helping survivors of domestic violence heal and thrive in safe and supportive communities.

Hours : Part-time (24 hours / week) Monday through Thursday. This position will work a flexible, hybrid schedule with flexibility for daytime, evening, and occasional weekend events. This is a non-exempt position. Work will be based out of TSSs administrative office located in Newtonville, MA, as well as will require travel to and from events.

Essential Service : The Second Step is considered an essential service organization. This position is designated as an essential employee who may be required to report to work during times when the Commonwealth declares a state of emergency or stay at home orders.

Reports to : Director of Prevention Education

Primary Objectives : The Prevention Educator will play a key role in expanding The Second Steps violence prevention and education work across the community. This role focuses on delivering engaging presentations, building culturally responsive outreach materials, coordinating events, and deepening partnerships with a wide variety of trusted spacesfrom schools and service agencies to libraries, salons, housing authorities, local businesses and organizations, and more.

Key Responsibilities

Facilitation & Training

  • Deliver interactive, trauma-informed presentations on domestic violence, healthy relationships, how to respond to disclosures, domestic violence and the workplace, and related topics for youth and adults.
  • Facilitate education sessions in diverse settings, including schools, housing programs, workplaces, health centers, and community spaces and businesses.
  • Assist with adapting and tailoring curriculum to meet the needs of specific populations or partner organizations.

Outreach & Relationship Building

  • Represent The Second Step at community tabling events, workshops, fairs, festivals, and trainings.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with schools, libraries, mutual aid groups, health providers, cultural organizations, and other community-based partners.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration and deeper engagement (e.g., displays, evolving partnerships, shared campaigns).
  • Materials & Resource Development

  • Create and maintain engaging outreach materials, handouts, and resource guides aligned with The Second Steps messaging and brand.
  • Support the translation and cultural adaptation of materials into additional languages (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole).
  • Help organize and track physical outreach supplies (e.g., QR cards, banners, giveaways, brochures).
  • Community Engagement Projects

  • Support the development and coordination of ongoing projects such as educational displays, library partnerships, and community-led awareness campaigns.
  • Help facilitate initiatives like the Safe Community Ambassadors Program and related volunteer outreach efforts.
  • Track attendance, feedback, and impact metrics using provided templates and systems.
  • Collaboration & Internal Support

  • Meet weekly with the Directorof Prevention Education to plan, reflect, and strategize.
  • Contribute to brainstorming and piloting new engagement strategies.
  • Other Projects & Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in staff and team meetings and trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned by agency leadership.

  • 2-3 years of experience in prevention education and / or outreach.
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to teach and facilitate presentations with both youth and adults.
  • Comfortable tabling with survivors and providing immediate emotional support as needed.
  • People person who enjoys talking to people, either in-person, on the phone, or over Zoom.
  • Enjoys making and maintaining connections.
  • Nonprofit experience is appreciated; a commitment to our mission is required.
  • Ability to generate educational material, including written, graphic and video.
  • Comfort with flexible scheduling and navigating varying environments.
  • Familiarity with domestic violence, trauma-informed care, and anti-oppressive frameworks.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects and to manage competing priorities simultaneously & precisely.
  • Ability to thrive in both team and independent environments.
  • Proactive, self-directed, and highly collaborative.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • Multi-lingual is a plus.

  • CORI (Criminal Offender Record Inquiry) check following the first interview
  • SORI (Sexual Offender Record Inquiry) check following the first interview
  • Must have drivers license and / or reliable transportation to events
  • Physical Demands & Work Environment : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job. Employee may be required to help move small items up to 25 lbs.

    Compensation and Benefits : Pay rate starts at $26 per hour for 24 hours / week. Benefits include 403(b) plan with employer matching up to 3%, life and disability insurance through Colonial Life, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and professional development opportunities.
