Systems Programmer / Developer II - Department Of Phs / Bmic

Charleston, South Carolina

The Biomedical Informatics program is seeking a programmer / developer to work under the Cancer Center shared resource (CIDER) program to support programming with these grants and others. This will include programming and data science research development in Python and R to support biomedical research projects, assisting with developing the infrastructure and setting up machine learning projects and server environments, helping with data extraction and processing and handling research data requests, working on documentation of code being developed, and collaborating with other research team members to prepare reports, assist with publications, presentations, and other various tasks throughout the grant process.

Job Duties :

  • 35% Perform data science research development tasks including programming in Python and R towards biomedical research projects. The focus of these projects will be primarily on natural language processing using advanced artificial intelligence techniques such as deep learning and large language models.
  • 20% Assisting with setting up the infrastructure to perform machine learning projects including but not limited to setting up the machine learning environment (e.g., Python environment, installation of required packages, setting up Docker containers, documentation of the setup) and server environment(s).
  • 20% Helping with data extraction and processing for machine learning, research or operational projects. Responsibilities will include assistance in handling research and operational data requests consultations and delivery.
  • 10% Work on documentation of the code being developed including explanation to researchers and detailed description of the tasks performed for inclusion on grants and in publications. This includes communication of the methods used through presentations to the research team as well bringing team members up-to-speed, and training staff, graduate assistants, or student employees on the methods described above.
  • 10% Prepare reports for colleagues, leadership, and scientific publications and presentation.
  • 5% Work with other team members and project managers as needed through meetings and collaborative programming to ensure that the assigned tasks are accomplished in a timely manner.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Requirements : A high school diploma and three years work experience in the modification and maintenance of system programs, the design and development of system software, or the testing and debugging of system software. An associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for the required work experience.
