We are seeking a highly skilled Building Systems Chief Engineer to oversee the daily operation and maintenance of our cutting-edge, net-zero-ready headquarters opening in early 2027. The ideal candidate has expertise in high-performance building systems, renewable energy technologies, and preventative maintenance for large-scale commercial facilities.
As a critical member of the design coordination team, the Building Systems Chief Engineer will collaborate with architects and designers to optimize the facility's sustainability, functionality, and ease of operation. Responsibilities
DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION
Reviews and provides feedback on building design documents, such as architectural plans, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) drawings, and sustainability specifications to ensure they meet operational requirements and efficiency standards
Participates in design meetings with architects, engineers, and contractors to discuss and resolve design conflicts, suggest alternative solutions, and ensure the design is aligned with the company's sustainability goals
Conducts site inspections during construction to identify potential issues and verify proper installation of building systems
NET-ZERO ENERGY (NZE) BUILDING MANAGEMENT
Develops and implements strategies to achieve and maintain net-zero energy performance in the building, including monitoring energy consumption, optimizing renewable energy systems, and identifying energy-saving opportunities
Oversees the maintenance and repair of all building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection, with a focus on energy efficiency and conservation
Establishes preventive maintenance programs to ensure long-term facility reliability and regulatory compliance
Manages the building automation system to optimize energy use and maintain a comfortable indoor environment
Develops and maintains an inventory of building equipment and systems, including life cycle assessments and replacement schedules
Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations, as well as sustainability and environmental guidelines
Collaborates with internal stakeholders to promote sustainable practices and awareness, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility
Maintains green building certifications, such as LEED, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards and requirements
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, or a related field, is preferred
DC 3rd Engineers License or equivalent
Minimum of 5 years of experience in facility management, preferably in a commercial setting, with a focus on sustainability and net-zero energy practices
Professional certifications like Certified Building Engineer (CBE) or HVAC certifications, such as the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification
A Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus
Extensive expertise in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and energy management systems / maintenance, and other building mechanical equipment
In-depth knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and environmental compliance
Expertise in building automation systems, facility and energy management software, computer-aided facilities management (CAFM) systems, and sustainability reporting tools
Familiarity with green building standards and sustainability certifications, such as LEED, Energy Star, and WELL Building Standard
Proficiency in budget management and financial analysis
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, project management software, and CAD tools
OSHA 30-hour certification required
Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and updating construction project-related drawings
Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders
