Overview

Children's Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, the Commonwealth's only free-standing pediatric facility, is recruiting full-time Physician Assistants (PAs) to enhance a 32-bed, multi-disciplinary Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). In collaboration with the University of Virginia's Congenital Cardiac Surgery program, our PICU provides advanced care for critically ill children, including post-operative cardiac patients. We particularly welcome PAs with specialized training in Cardiac Intensive Care to join our team, as their expertise will strengthen our mission to deliver top-tier pediatric care.

Our facility is renowned for its robust Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program, active Trauma service, and full spectrum of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties. This role offers a unique opportunity to work in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment with cutting-edge technology and a commitment to excellence.

Key Duties

Provide expert critical care to pediatric patients with life-threatening conditions in a collaborative PICU setting.

Work alongside a skilled team of intensivists, surgeons, and nurses to manage diverse cases, including trauma, ECMO, and post-operative cardiac care.

Perform diagnostic evaluations, develop treatment plans, and execute procedures within the PA scope of practice, adhering to evidence-based protocols.

Support the Congenital Cardiac Surgery program by providing specialized care for patients with complex congenital heart defects.

Document patient care thoroughly and engage with families to provide clear, empathetic communication about treatment plans and progress.

Participate in multidisciplinary rounds to ensure coordinated, high-quality care delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience : Prior experience in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is mandatory.

Certification :

Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) credential required.

Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications must be obtained before starting.

Schedule : Full-time role with a rotating schedule of days, nights, and weekends.

Education : Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced training or experience in Cardiac Intensive Care, particularly with congenital heart conditions.

Proficiency in managing ECMO patients or pediatric trauma cases.

Strong teamwork and communication skills to excel in a high-stakes, interdisciplinary environment.
