Assistant Director of Business Development

Location : Remote | Reports to : Director of Marketing & Business Development

Position Overview

The Assistant Director of Business Development plays a key role in telling our story to prospective institutional partners and supporting our growth. While this position contributes to a variety of business development activities, its primary focus is on crafting compelling, tailored proposals that demonstrate our expertise and commitment to institutional partner success. The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer, detail-oriented, and able to transform complex information into clear, persuasive narratives. In addition, the AD for Business Development will also provide data and market intelligence to support efforts to increase outreach opportunities for new partners, which allows our search teams to connect transformative leaders with the institutions that need them most.

Key Responsibilities

Proposal Development (Primary Focus)

  • Lead the writing and preparation of proposals, ensuring they are customized, accurate, and aligned with institutional and hiring authority needs.
  • Gather and synthesize information from internal teams, research, and institutional materials to produce persuasive, polished documents.
  • Maintain and update proposal templates, case studies, and organizational qualifications.
  • Serve as the main point of contact to manage proposals, coordinate contributions from team members to meet deadlines, establish institutional presentations, and usher the process through to a contract.

Data Gathering & Research

  • Maintain accurate, organized records of leads, proposals, and outcomes.
  • Identify outreach opportunities for proposals, introductions, and relationship building.
  • Research prospective partners, industry trends, and competitor information to inform business development strategies.
  • Identify areas to strengthen standard templates and communications.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, best practices, and legislative or regulatory changes that may impact higher education and executive search and incorporate these insights into proposals and business development strategies.
  • Business Development Support

  • Prepare leadership for introductory calls and lead such calls as needed.
  • Assist in preparing presentation materials, capability statements, and other institution-facing documents.
  • Support outreach efforts by providing background research and briefing materials for leadership.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing and Business Development to align proposal content with brand voice and messaging.
  • Lead responses to complex general services RFPs that are essential to a thriving practice.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in communications, marketing, journalism, English, or a related field; work experience and training may be substituted for the degree.
  • 3+ years of professional experience, preferably in proposal writing, business development, grant writing, or marketing.
  • Demonstrated skill in writing, editing, and storytelling.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Dynamics (or any) CRM system.
  • Knowledge of higher education, executive search, and / or professional services preferred.
