Mechanical Engineer

As a Mechanical Engineer, you help drive outcomes for one large project or multiple smaller programs, define internal roadmaps, and provide engineering design specifications to manufacturing areas. You develop hardware architecture or design validation by converting hardware product features to specifications, requirements, and test processes for both the product and its overall system. You solve medium-to-high complexity problems by leveraging multiple industry-standard approaches to reach an elegant solution, even if the problem is ambiguous. You identify mechanical options for applicable processes with the ability to rank other options and discuss differences in detail.

As a subject-matter expert in the field of hardware and mechanical engineering activities, you are seen as a go-to person for providing inputs on process improvements. You are a critical contributor to the design of sensing systems that fuel the next generation of the companys Maps product. You create accurate and robust systems operated in challenging environments, meeting a myriad of operational requirements. You have a broad mandate to make fundamental contributions to a variety of complex products and offer many opportunities for impact across the mapping organization. You collaborate with multiple stakeholders and multi-disciplinary teams and you serve as mechanical lead for complex systems.

Responsibilities Overview :

Leverage expertise in manufacturing techniques, materials and simulation to develop the best solution to a complex set of requirements that youll be instrumental in shaping.

Lead efforts for the documentation of the hardware design, its implementation, or test / validation results throughout the product life cycle.

Perform failure analysis, design and direct validation tests, and direct strategic investments in tooling and technology to solve future problems.

Evaluate hardware designs to ensure they are feasible to execute or test from the engineering perspective. Identify and highlight opportunities to customize features needed to iterate the final product build.

Develop hardware architecture or design validation by converting hardware product features to specifications, requirements, and test processes for both the product and its overall system. Select components and IPs to enable future system / product performance and the overall solution. Identify and document the product definition and specifications through ones own contribution or contribution of other engineers.

Integrate hardware systems and their complex subsystems or components with other products, services, or networks across product areas and industry partners.

Anticipate and address hardware design issues or risks. Ensure validation of hardware design and implement design improvement.

Identify flaws and issues with hardware components or systems, debug and analyze issues, risks, or trade-offs with limited precedent, and implement corrective solutions to non-standard hardware failures by recommending corrective solutions.

Build prototypes and design hardware components for a product area (e.g., optics, lasers, cables, audio circuits, antenna) in collaboration with peers and vendor teams. Drive efforts to create design documents or test plans and to incorporate assembly requirements, operation documents, and cost constraints into component design.

Evaluate hardware design feasibility based on product requirements. Help identify and customize the design solution based on trade-offs in packaging, performance, power or technology selection, and scope hardware project. Collaborate with internal partners and external vendors.

Key Areas of Accountability :

Documentation : Create and maintain a comprehensive and understandable set of design documents, including requirements, 2D and 3D drawings, textual design documentation, system specifications, bills of materials, test plans and reports, assembly standard operating procedures.

Developing detailed 3D models of mechanical systems. Fluent in both design aspects (optomechanics, structures, materials, analysis, tolerances) as well as the communication aspects (drawings, GD&T) involved in conveying this design into production.

Mechanical analysis : Fluent in a tool set, such as FEA, to predict the performance and reliability of mechanical components and systems under harsh environmental conditions and stresses.

Mechanical design : Critical high-level system design input in concert with other function experts.

Top Skills :

Knowledge of manufacturing processes (machining, sheet metal, welding, injection molding, casting, composites and additive manufacturing a plus)

Knowledge of engineering materials (metals, polymers, adhesives, lubricants, composites, ceramics, etc.) particularly those that are used in Street View operating environments (operating temps, outdoor exposure, humidity, pressure, etc.)

Good communication skills; proactively provide updates on progress of work / projects; timely and responsive communication

Ability to generate reports and conduct presentations to summarize analyses / investigations / decisions

Knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and CAD modeling / drawing best practices ? high quality understanding and detailing of deliverables (drawings)

Knowledge of opto-mechanics

Knowledge of or expertise in various computation-based analysis tools for mechanical systems, including FEA and CFD.

Knowledge of PLM and how it is used and how it affects the entire life of the product

Generation of clear, concise, and complete ECRs

Education :

Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Electrical Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Years of Experience :

6 years of experience working in Mechanical Engineering (ME)
