Age Specific Responsibility

Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Summary

Assumes full responsibility for evaluating patients' need for occupational therapy. Plans and executes individual treatment programs in accordance with the state of Michigan licensure and OT scope of practice. Keeps treatment skills updated through continuing education, evidence-based research, and program development. Perform job responsibilities in accordance with the program's strategic objectives and goals to carry out organizational strategic objectives.

Essential Job Responsibilities

o Evaluates patient condition.

o Establishes treatment goals in collaboration with patient and family as appropriate, and in collaboration with the treatment team. Treatment goals should be interdisciplinary and patient-centered whenever possible. Establishes written treatment plan and administers treatment for each patient according to the stated goals. Delegates responsibilities to occupational therapy assistants as appropriate.

o Re-evaluates patient's status and effects of treatment. Revises treatment plan as necessary Reviews revised goals with patient and family as appropriate.

o Evaluates patient's need for medical equipment and orders the appropriate equipment as necessary. Evaluates equipment upon delivery and instructs patient, patient's family, and health care workers on its use.

o Participates in planning for patient discharge by considering and communicating with patient, family, community support / services, and environmental limitations.

o Participates in conferences / discussions as needed and exchange of written records with other interdisciplinary team members to integrate occupational therapy treatment plan.

o Instructs the patient and the family in occupational therapy procedures as part of providing patient and family education including written instructions as necessary.
