Under the supervision of the Program Administrator and Clinical Director in the Substance Use Disorder Treatment Department, this position is responsible for the delivery of support services to individuals with opioid and other substance use disorders and those who have co-occurring disorders. Services must be provided in accordance with the Performance Contract, Community Service Standards, Helen Farabee Centers policy and procedures, Medicaid standards, and Health & Human Services Commission (HHSC) guidelines. Applicant must be able to pass a background check and a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

The Certified Peer Specialist / Recovery Coach provides support services, serves as a consumer advocate, and provides individuals receiving services information and peer support in an outpatient setting. Incumbent will perform a wide range of tasks to assist individuals in regaining control over their own lives and over their own recovery process. This individual will role model competency, stability in recovery and ongoing coping skills. They will support individuals and learning teams (staff and community) providing hope, encouragement, support, self-determination, and connection to the community. Ability to monitor participants in Recovery Support Services for up to one year. Collect data as required by Helen Farabee Centers and HHSC.

Teamwork, initiative, and positive example in work habits are expected at all times. Provides consultation and support to fellow staff as needed. This position requires an aptitude for working with those who have opioid and other substance use disorders and who may also be suffering from a mental health disorder, often impoverished people; and for seeing this as work in which we take great pride. The incumbent should have lived experience and knowledge of substance use disorders. This position will maintain an awareness of counselors' caseload needs for supportive intervention by attending staff meetings and where requested will participate in treatment planning sessions. Will have the ability to conduct education groups in the community and treatment settings. HFC incorporates principles of trauma-informed care throughout the agency, emphasizing cultural sensitivity and a safe and respectful environment for all individuals served and staff. All job descriptions include the responsibility to learn about and implement trauma-informed practices within the scope of work for the position. Reassignment is a condition of employment that may occur at the employer's discretion. Your work location and hours could change based on program needs.

Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience

High school diploma or a GED. Eligibility for designation / certification as a Peer Provider and / or Recovery Coach within the first 4 to 12 months of hire. Will conduct duties based on policies and procedures, HHSC requirements, and Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (Certifying body). Personal lived experience with a substance use disorder and / or a co-occurring disorder is required.

Must have valid driver's license and be insurable to drive Center vehicles. Must pass and maintain all Center mandated trainings. Must possess current or be able to obtain a designation / certification as a peer specialist / recovery coach and keep current.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to read and proof correspondence, reports and computer printouts manually, etc.
• Good spelling and grammar skills.
• Ability to write progress notes according to standard with acceptable spelling and grammar.
• Display a customer service orientation; at all times treating patients as equals and partners.
• Ability to work independently in the community and treatment setting

• Possess knowledge of opioid and other substance use disorders, medication assisted therapy, and opioid overdose education and prevention

• Skilled in the use of network computers, word processing, database software, CMBHS, as it relates to documenting patient and family contacts. Will be required to input data into CMBHS or other HHSC designated system.
