Department Summary

The Division of Student Life supports the university's academic mission and strategic plan through comprehensive programs and services that promote and advance student learning and success while fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus community. Student Life includes four major portfolios, the Office of the Dean of Students, Experiential Learning & Engagement, Health & Wellbeing, and Division Administration. Key programs and departments within the division include but are not limited to University Health Services, Erb Memorial Union, Physical Education & Recreation, Parent and Family Programs, Major Student Events (Commencement, Homecoming, University Day), Fraternity and Sorority Life, Counseling, Health Promotion, Community and Belonging, Student Government Engagement & Success, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Support for Students in Crisis and Students of Concern.

The Office of the Dean of Students is committed to advancing student learning that builds community. The programs reporting to the Dean of Students work with Student Life staff, student groups, and other members of the university community in the development of curricular and co-curricular opportunities that assure the integration of academic and student life.

Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Coordinator of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Education and Support Services (LGBTESS) is to serve as a resource for Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Agender, and Aromantic (2SLGBTQIA3+) students by providing support and connecting students to programs and services. This position actively works with campus partners to ensure that 2SLGBTQIA3+ students have a successful, engaging, and inclusive experience at the University of Oregon. The Coordinator is responsible for initiating community building and outreach opportunities, providing educational, engagement, and resource-based programming.

This position requires the ability to work some evenings and weekends, and reports to an Assistant Director of Community and Belonging in the Office of the Dean of Students.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • One year of experience in working with students, preferably in a college, university, or similar setting.
  • One year of experience working effectively with 2SLGBTQIA3+ individuals.
  • Two years of experience implementing educational or community programming.

Professional Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues significant to 2SLGBTQIA3+ students, and other diverse communities both internal and external to institutions of higher education, or in similar contexts and environments.
  • Ability to understand the needs of 2SLGBTQIA3+ students, set priorities among those needs, and respond to those needs to the extent that the number of students, facilities, and resources permit.
  • Demonstrated competency and success working with 2SLGBTQIA3+ individuals, and other diverse populations from historically underrepresented and underserved populations, ideally in a college, university, or similar setting.
  • Ability to cultivate and sustain partnerships and collaborative relationships with various constituencies.
  • Ability to provide leadership in planning, design, and delivery of programs and services.
  • Ability to make fiscally sound decisions and manage budgetary and payroll operations within institutional policies and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate, mediate, advise, advocate, and mentor.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to demonstrate initiative and achieve department goals with excellent attention to detail.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs / Higher Education Administration, Sociology, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Political Science, or another relevant field.
  • Prior experience working with, advising, or supervising 2SLGBTQIA3+ students, students from historically underrepresented populations, or student organizations, at a university or similar setting (including but not limited to non-profit organizations and community agencies).
