Job Description
The Managing Editor, under the Director of Publications, guides the process of creating and publishing the National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly, receives submissions and proposes thematic issues, coordinates internal review and blinded external peer review, accepts pieces for publication, secures publication agreements and copyright permissions as necessary, conducts or oversees copyediting, factchecking, typesetting, proofreading, and correcting, and publishes the issues online and in print.
The Managing Editor will also provide support, as needed, for twelve yearly issues of Ethics & Medics.
The candidate will have a strong sense of organization and will consistently meet deadlines.
The Managing Editor is expected to collaborate with authors to develop their voice, clarify their perspectives, strengthen their arguments, and fairly engage with the perspectives of others; collaborate with columnists, book reviewers, and other editors; select and collaborate with blinded peer reviewers; propose themes for special issues; and invite and coordinate with guest-editors. In addition, this individual will be responsible for training other members of the publications department on writing standards, especially those in the Chicago Manual of Style, and for maintaining in-house style guides and typesetting templates.
The Managing Editor also advises the Editor-in-Chief on other publication projects in the National Catholic Bioethics Center. This position requires strong organizational, critical thinking, communication and writings skills, and a familiarity with the life sciences and the Catholic moral tradition.
