Description : Boston Public Schools seeks a highly qualified and experienced school librarian to join our community of learners and leaders. This role offers an environment that supports creativity and innovation, respecting the skills and abilities of librarians. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to equitable literacy, justice-based, and anti-bias educational practices. They should embrace a philosophy aligned with our community vision for a rigorous academic program, culturally responsive practices, and a belief that all children can learn at high levels.

Reports to : Principal / Head of Schools

Responsibilities :

  • Support students and staff in becoming critical thinkers and effective users, evaluators, and creators of information.
  • Create a caring environment with equitable access to physical and digital library collections.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support curriculum through information literacy and diverse, culturally responsive texts.
  • Manage the physical and digital collections, including equity audits, maintenance, selection, development, and organization.
  • Provide resources supporting curriculum, current events, and school and community culture.
  • Communicate library resources and programs to staff and families.
  • Foster a love of reading and storytelling among students.

  • Communicating Professional Knowledge : Demonstrate understanding of child development, design effective plans with measurable outcomes, and differentiate instruction.
  • Effective Instruction : Build inclusive learning environments, engage all students, and adapt instruction to meet diverse needs.
  • Cultural Proficiency : Respect and maintain an environment that values diverse backgrounds and identities.
  • Parent / Family Engagement : Build respectful relationships with families, communicate clearly, and promote student learning at home and school.
  • Professional Reflection & Collaboration : Reflect on practice, seek feedback, collaborate with colleagues, and support student development through shared efforts.
  • Qualifications - Required :

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Valid Massachusetts School Librarian / Library License (All Levels)
  • Meet state and federal licensing and qualification standards
  • Ability to meet Boston Public Schools' standards of effective teaching
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. from the first day of employment
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Fluency in one of BPS's official languages : Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean or Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali is highly valued.
  • Terms : BTU Group 1
