Diagnostic Imaging Technician - Computer Topography

Currently recruiting an Diagnostic Imaging Technician - Computer Topography to provide care to active duty military members and their families at Joint Base Andrews, MD. The Diagnostic Imaging Technician - Computer Topography is a full-time position, 80 hours per two weeks, schedule can vary, on call is required. Full benefits, including 17 days paid vacation / sick leave and 11 paid Federal holidays.

DUTIES OF THE DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING TECHNICIAN - COMPUTER TOPOGRAPHY :

• Performs administrative duties to include receiving patients and imaging requests, scheduling, and explaining methods of examination in person and over the telephone. Receives and interprets requests or instruction for CT scans. Assesses patient clinical history to determine the most effective protocols. Consults with referring physicians and technicians as necessary to obtain information regarding patient s examination. Utilizes hospital information systems.
• Performs daily warm up and assigned quality control checks of the CT scanner.
• Coordinates care for routine, emergent, inpatient, and special needs patients with the appropriate clinical staff. Receives patients and explains procedures, providing humane and appropriate care and communicates to alleviate fear of examination. Correctly positions the patient for the examination and makes adjustments necessary for the required examination. Determines if any special patient preparation is required.
• Assists / performs consent procedures prior to CT exams requiring written consent from patients.
• Operates CT scanner and auto injector. Determines proper instrument technical factors and control settings to ensure correct calculated exposure of targeted body parts. Programs the examination equipment. Sets up the machine and scanning techniques to be employed. Performs all CT examinations according to department protocols.
• Assures that sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters, or other required materials are available and in place. Understands and screens patients for contraindications to contrast use. Starts Intravenous lines for contrast administration. Prepares and administers contrast media orally, by enema, or intravenously under close supervision of a radiologist. Operates contrast power injector. Adjust injection rates. Informs radiologists when a conflict exists prior to injection, and responds promptly to adverse contrast reactions if / when necessary.
• Performs a full range of CT examinations including but not limited to;contrast and non- contrast, head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine, extremities and specialized studies such as angiography, etc.
• Performs numerous complex CT examinations on all anatomical areas for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Assists radiologists and / or other physicians in performing invasive diagnostic techniques such as biopsies, aspirations, radiation therapy and interventional procedures.
• Adjusts imaging parameters to include : window / levels, sets field of view, obtain part measurements, obtains regions of interest, reconstructs, and reformats images. Performs digital reconstruction of acquired images in accordance with standard protocol, physician request, and radiologist needs. Performs 3D reconstruction as appropriate to physician needs.
• Ensures only optimal examinations are presented to the radiologist for interpretation. Maintains records of patients examined, examinations performed, sequences taken, and technical factors used.
• Identifies abnormalities during testing and determines need for additional scans of affected area. Notifies physician of significant scans requiring immediate attention.
• Utilizes the hospital information system and Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS) to acquire, transmit, and store digital CT examinations.
• Images to be read remotely will be transmitted by the technologist, according to department policies, utilizing PACS.
• Routinely performs digital image library functions to include acquiring, reformatting, transmission, storage, and loan procedures.
• Maintains and cleans CT equipment on a regular basis in accordance with Radiology department standards. Stocks and maintains an adequate level of supplies required to perform CT examinations. Recommends necessary monthly repairs when diagnostic quality is degraded.
• Differentiates artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognizes electronic equipment limitations.
• Practices safety principles. Performs two patient identifier verification of patients. Assists with consent procedures prior to exams requiring written consent from patients. Safely oversees, and brings to practice, As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles for patients and staff. Performs equipment quality control checks. Monitors personnel to ensure protective procedures such as radiation safety, hazardous material communications, and Air Force Occupational Safety and Health programs are followed. Performs tests on radiation protection equipment. Assesses staff competence, and monitors appropriateness of care and completeness of examination requests.
• As needed, assists with student training activities IAW with regulation and course director plans;may instruct new personnel as they observe standard procedures to complete on-the-job training.
• Attends and participates in all meetings, staff conferences, and other appropriate professional activities as required by the supervisor.
• Recognizes the need for and institute the necessary emergency measures for situations where a person requires resuscitation procedures due to cardiac or respiratory arrest. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING TECHNICIAN - COMPUTER TOPOGRAPHY :

Must be knowledgeable in anatomy and physiology;medical terminology and ethics;legal aspects of medicine;healthcare accreditation standards;radiation physics, radiobiology, and radiation protection;basic electronics theory;techniques of operating radiographic and specialized diagnostic imaging equipment;radiographic positioning;patient care and monitoring techniques;image recording media and processing techniques;quality control procedures;infection control;aseptic and sterile techniques;reactions to contrast media;BLS;methods of recording the fluoroscopic image;and medical records administration.

Licensure / Registration : M Current registration as a Radiologic Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
