Project Description :

Join the Grid Innovation and Infrastructure Solutions team to support Xcel Energy and its customers in adopting and leveraging new technologies like energy storage microgrids and distributed energy resources management system (DERMS). We aim to be a net-zero energy provider by 2050 providing 100% carbon-free electricity to our customers. This team in the Distribution Engineering department are engineers and leaders responsible for the conceptualization design project management commissioning and oversight of distribution microgrid and energy storage projects. We are also exploring cutting-edge technologies like DERMS to enhance grid visibility and manageability of DER like solar electric vehicles and storage. We create direct impact by launching emerging technologies to conduct technological assessment and long-term viability.

Typical intern responsibilities mayinclude but are not limited to :

As an intern you will gain hands-on experience with all the engineering safety and stakeholder engagement efforts to deploy emerging technologies and integrate them with utility power systems successfully and safely. You will work closely with and be mentored by a lead Engineer and team who leads the deployment of these projects.

This role provides the opportunity to not only learn how a modern utility operates but to help bring novel ideas and technologies from concept to reality in a truly critical and rapidly evolving industry. Your role will include studying project proposals reviewing designs checking safety considerations and hazards leading tasks within the team evaluating the feasibility and practical application of novel solutions along with their supporting control information and communication technologies and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

This position is for a June 1st 2026 start. These positions may have the possibility to extend beyond the internships initial term based on the candidates successful performance and Xcels business needs.

Minimum Requirements

Current student Junior status (as of May 202 6 ) or higher .

Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree inElectrical Engineering.

Able to commute to the service centers i n Denver CO or Minneapolis MN

Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) / part time during the fall ( up to 20 hours a week) .

Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of and interest for renewable energy and distributed energy resources like solar panels and energy storage.

Ability to consider systems and detailed solutions

Working in a team

Written and verbal communication skills

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is : $22.50 to $30.10 per hour
