Job Description

Under general supervision, administers the Employee Health Services Program dedicated to the provision of efficient, cost effective and quality care to UMMC and corporate UMMS employees.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Develop, implement, maintain and evaluate Employee Health Services programs / components to include, but not limited to :

Pre-placement assessments

  • Workers compensation evaluation and management
  • Fitness for duty evaluations
  • Occupational exposures to infections
  • PPD skin testing
  • Vaccination
  • Coordinates and operationalizes the random urine drug testing program.
  • Collaborate with the Risk Management office and Worker’s Compensation administrator, tracking claims, injury trends. Develop strategies to decrease the number of work related injuries and lost time days.
  • Collaborate with the Safety Office, reporting unsafe work situations and maintain current information regarding employees enrolled in the medical surveillance programs.
  • Collaborate with the Infection Control Office in the implementation, evaluation and statistical analysis of OSHA and Medical Systems required programs and occupational exposure programs, i.e. tuberculosis, blood and body fluids and other infectious diseases. Provide counseling services to employees so exposed.
  • Maintenance of the computerized data base documenting employee health information. Present relevant tracking / trending data to UMMS Human Resources and administration. Assist in the evaluation of the system and its appropriateness at UMMS.
  • Maintain current knowledge of requirements / standards set forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Recommend the creation or adaptation of employee health services accordingly.
  • Develop an effective Employee Health Services team through leadership and communication. Foster an environment that is customer focused with high productivity. Maintain departmental budget.
  • Qualifications

    Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland, or eligibility for licensure due to Compact state agreements outlined through the Maryland Board of Nursing, is required.
  • Five years nursing experience in a hospital setting required. Previous experience with employee health services and / or occupation health preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have strong interpersonal skills to support the development of excellent working relationships with line managers and hospital departmental directors.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide interpretation of laboratory results and infectious disease processes to employees. Knowledge of computer applications and of personal computer systems is recommended.
  • Demonstrated skills in performing assessments and health history reviews required.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patients, departmental units and medical staff regarding employee health procedures.
  • Ability to respond, investigate, identify and problem-solve Employee Health issues that require immediate and decisive action pertinent to employee job activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to manage care appropriate to the age of the patients served within areas of responsibility. Incorporates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span into service design, and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.
