Specialty Pharmacist

JOB SUMMARY The Specialty Pharmacist plays a critical role in optimizing therapy outcomes for patients with complex, chronic, or rare conditions requiring specialty medications.

This position ensures safe, compliant, and cost-effective medication management while providing exceptional clinical support, education, and coordination between patients, prescribers, payers, and specialty care teams.

The pharmacist will work closely with the Pharmacist in Charge and clinical leadership to uphold URAC and ACHC accreditation standards, maintain regulatory compliance, and contribute to the continued growth of the specialty pharmacy program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES  Clinical & Patient Care Review and verify prescriptions for appropriateness, accuracy, and safety in alignment with clinical protocols and payer requirements.

Counsel patients and caregivers on proper medication use, side effects, storage, and adherence strategies.

Perform clinical assessments and therapeutic monitoring for specialty disease states (e.g., oncology, hepatitis, inflammatory conditions, HIV, multiple sclerosis).

Collaborate with prescribers and nurses to adjust therapy plans as needed.

Monitor and document adverse drug events, medication errors, and clinical interventions.

Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation within the electronic medical record or dispensing platform.

Dispensing & Operations Prepare, verify, and dispense specialty medications in compliance with all state and federal pharmacy laws.

Ensure cold-chain integrity and proper handling of high-cost or temperature-sensitive medications.

Participate in inventory control, purchasing, and return management to optimize financial and operational efficiency.

Support direct-to-facility and patient-direct medication delivery workflows.

Regulatory & Accreditation Compliance Ensure adherence to URAC, ACHC, and state Board of Pharmacy standards.

Participate in internal audits, quality assurance reviews, and policy updates.

Maintain all necessary pharmacy records, licenses, and controlled substance documentation.

Stay current with new regulations, clinical guidelines, and therapeutic developments.

Patient Support & Reimbursement Coordinate prior authorizations, benefits investigations, and refill management with technicians and reimbursement specialists.

Educate patients on copay assistance and patient support programs.

Support compliance with payer and manufacturer reporting requirements.

Team Collaboration Collaborate with pharmacists, technicians, and clinicians to streamline workflow and improve service quality.

Support staff education and mentorship in specialty pharmacy practices.

Contribute to new program initiatives, such as expansion into new therapeutic areas or infusion services.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy.

Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in [Insert State].

Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in a specialty or clinical pharmacy setting.

Proficiency with specialty pharmacy platforms (e.g., PioneerRx, CPR+, PrimeRx, or similar).

Strong knowledge of specialty medication workflows, payer requirements, and clinical documentation standards.

Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP) credential or eligibility to obtain within 12 months.

Experience with URAC or ACHC-accredited pharmacy programs.

Clinical experience in one or more therapeutic areas (oncology, SUD, autoimmune diseases, HIV, hepatitis C, etc.).

Experience in medical billing or healthcare-administered drug reimbursement.

Exceptional communication and patient education skills.
