THE POSITION
With supervisor approval incumbents may be eligible for intermittent remote work; however they must physically reside within the Sacramento region or have the ability to regularly report to a City of Sacramento physical worksite with little notice.
This entry level position is part of the Information Technology (IT) Departments IT Operations Division under the Network and Telecom group. The position will work under the technical direction of higher classified telecommunications technicians and / or engineers. The Telecommunication Technician Trainee will support communications equipment and low voltage electrical systems used in public safety mobiles including but not limited to cars motorcycles helicopters boats and other motorized equipment. Additionally this position will support low voltage systems including Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Community Antenna Television (CATV) data and fiber cabling parking control and facility alerting and paging.
IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT
The ideal candidate will be able to support the Telecom group with the foundational skills in electronic technology radio communications systems or closely related field including basic electronic fundamentals with additional training in narrowband or broadband radio theory. An ideal candidate will also understand vehicle electronics including charging systems Direct Current (DC) power distribution and DC switches.
To perform entry level work in the installation maintenance and repair of all types of telecommunications equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level of the Telecommunications Technician series. Incumbents perform the less difficult work and are considered to be in a training status. They received direct supervision and are not expected to perform the full range of duties assigned to the journey level.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Direct supervision is provided by the Telecommunications Supervisor. Technical supervision may be provided by a Telecommunication Technician II.

One year of experience in communications systems installation maintenance and repair work.
Education :
One year of specialized training in electronics and electronic circuitry. A two year degree in electronics can be used as a substitution for the experience requirement.

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.
Special Qualifications :
Driver License :
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Ability to acquire certification as technically qualified to perform transmitter installation operation maintenance and repair by either the National Association of Business and Education Radio the Associated Public Safety Communications Officers or the Special Industrial Radio Service Assocation.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD :
Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

2. Training and Experience Exam : (Weighted 100%) The questions located at the end of the application are the Training and Experience (T&E) Exam. Responses to the T&E questions will be rated and scored. This exam will evaluate the relevance level and progression of a candidates education training and experience. 3. Eligibility : Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidates eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Telecommunications Technician Trainee examination.
4. Screening Committee : (Pass / Fail) All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications as stated on the job announcement for applications selected by the hiring department.
5. Conditional Hire : Upon receipt of a conditional offer the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan / fingerprinting. If applicable candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam controlled substance and / or alcohol test and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
