Supporting the delivery of the Trust’s public health strategy to ensure that ill health prevention and health promotion are part of core frontline service delivery, working on projects to deliver improvements in population health and reduction of health inequalities in the context of urgent and emergency care.

The post holder will enrol on a three-year, Level 6 Apprenticeship on Public Health Practice at the University of Salford.

Main duties of the job

The Public Health Practitioner (Apprentice) will gain skills and experience, including in supporting the Public Health team with project design and project delivery, data collection and analysis, promotion and communication with staff, patients, system partners, and the wider public. The L6 Apprenticeship will be fully funded, with protected time provided as part of their role to complete studies.

You will be part of an evolving team developing our organisational capacity to work as an effective system partner to improve health and wellbeing, and to reduce health inequalities in the communities we serve. The post holder will report to the Public Health Manager and will work with multi-disciplinary teams from across NWAS and across system partners to support the delivery of NWAS public health strategical aims to reduce health inequalities. The role will also support the development and delivery of training to increase capacity and capability for public health across the Trust, and ensure projects and learning are widely disseminated.

The applicant should have a keen interest in Public Health, data, research, project management, and communications with a view to deliver health improvement and prevention projects, and to support embedding of Public Health practice across NWAS.

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.

We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Essential criteria

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills to handle data and information confidently, and to evaluate and monitor progress against targets.
  • Able to receive, analyse and present information to a variety of audiences in a concise and easily readable format.
  • Good understanding of current health and social care policy, service relationships across the healthcare community, and of NHS systems and how they interface with the wider public sector.
  • Good understanding of the clinical governance principles and data protection to respect patient confidentiality all time.
  • Good organisational skills and an understanding of how to prioritise in order to meet deadlines, as well as how to work flexibly to tight and changing deadlines
  • Able to work remotely on own initiative and unsupervised for part of the working week (once Apprenticeship training is completed).
  • Qualifications and Knowledge

    Essential criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Where applicants are clinically qualified, current registration on professional register e.g., RGN (Nursing and Midwifery Council) Paramedic (Health Professions Council) or equivalent.
  • Willingness to undertake and complete Apprenticeship degree and gain BSc Public Health Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship.
  • Meeting acceptance requirements for entry to the L6 Public Health Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Salford (Two GCSEs at minimum grade C / grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics. Level 2 equivalents such as functional or key skills can be accepted)
  • Project Management certification, training or be able to demonstrate significant equivalent relevant experience.
