Job Description :
The consultant will support the digital evidence project by reviewing, validating, and entering historical and newly received electronic evidence into a new web-based evidence management system. This position is largely data entry + Excel manipulation, combined with basic hands-on interaction with computer hardware such as external hard drives and forensic disk images.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working with large volumes of data, and confident navigating computer file structures. They will work inside a secure evidence room onsite in Milpitas, ensure proper chain of custody, and follow all compliance and evidence-handling policies.
Responsibilities :
Data Entry & Validation
Perform high-volume data entry from documentation, spreadsheets, and digital devices.
Validate that forensic disk images match historical inventory records and chain-of-custody logs.
Review legacy Excel files, fill in missing fields, clean data, and reformat entries for import into the new system.
Upload evidence metadata into a web-based evidence management platform and confirm accuracy.
Hardware Handling & Evidence Processing
Plug in, power on, and navigate external hard drives to verify identifiers and stored contents.
Record details such as make, model, storage size, serial numbers, and file structures.
Print labels and affix tracking stickers to hardware and documentation.
Organize devices and paperwork in bins for short-term or long-term retention.
Chain of Custody & Compliance
Maintain strict chain-of-custody documentation for all devices received internally or via mail.
Identify inconsistencies in documentation or evidence and escalate appropriately.
Follow digital forensics principles for evidence handling, preservation, and security.
Adhere to all safety, data privacy, and legal standards within a controlled environment.
General Requirements
Excellent attention to detail-accuracy is critical for legal and compliance records.
Ability to lift / move hardware bins (50+ lbs).
Self-directed, reliable, and comfortable with repetitive tasks.
Ability to work fully onsite with minimal supervision.
Experience :
Strong Excel skills : sorting, filtering, cleaning data, templates, formatting for system uploads.
High-volume data entry experience with strong accuracy.
Basic hardware handling experience : plugging / unplugging drives, navigating file systems.
Ability to work with disk images or familiarity with Windows Explorer file structures.
Organized, methodical, and comfortable following detailed procedures.
Basic understanding of data privacy and information security standards.
