Position Pay : $75,000 - $78,000 (Depending on Experience)
Responsibilities :
- This position acts as Assistant to the EHS Manager / Director and supervises the EHS Technicians and Professionals in this unit.
- Analyzes work environments to design and implement programs to control, eliminate and prevent disease, injury and / or environmental impact caused by chemical, physical, radiological and biological agents, ergonomic and or other factors.
- Conducts air sampling for mold, nuisance dust, hazardous chemical (i.e. PCB, organics), and asbestos and provide technical reports. Conduct noise surveys and evaluations using all of the necessary equipment / instrumentation, respirator fit testing, lab fume hood evaluations and provide reports on all.
- Enforce all Federal and State EPA, NCDENR, OSHA regulations related to the University; monitor maintenance of an up-to-date MSDS file; track chemical inventories as well as maintain oversight of disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous chemical waste; provide support to responsible administrator on bio-safety concerns on the NCA&T, Kannapolis and JSNN campuses; serve as the Radiation Safety officer.
- Conducts periodic surveys of university facilities for accessibility and compliance with ADA requirements. Monitors, manages and plans for transitions, plans and collaborates with Facilities Engineering for physical accessibility following renovation of existing facilities and construction of new buildings.
- Responds to emergency situations that may arise on campus. Maintains telephone or radio communication with the office throughout the workday and when on-call after hours.
- Reviews and investigates accidents assigned by the Director and responsible for OSH 300 log.
- Provides supervision to EHS staff in the absence of the Director and to the Safety officers.
- Makes recommendations to the EHS Director concerning the need for new policies and revisions of existing policies.
- Conducts research activities on special assignments.
- Provides training to university employees on the federal, state, and other standard requirements regarding safety programs on campus.
- Mentors’ students; develops training opportunities to enhance students’ knowledge and ability to perform facility assessment activities.
- Interfaces with University faculty and staff on all environmental health and safety concerns effectively. Works tactfully and cooperatively with the public and students.
- Advises University staff regarding life safety and environmental concerns.
Requirements :
Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science / Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.Valid Driver’s License.Preferred : Supervisor prefers Master of Science Degree in Occupational Safety, Chemistry, Biology, Safety Management, Environmental Science, or Health Physics OR 4 years’ experience of progressive occupational safety and health experience and management experience. Experience in Radiation Safety and Biosafety.Ability to demonstrate a high level of job responsibility, ability to work independently, operates a limited variety / complexity of equipment / machinery / devices used in the handling of hazardous and or radiological waste materials; Ability to effectively communicate oral and written.
