Clark Nexsen is seeking an Automation Controls Technical Designer who will perform numerous Controls Engineering–related tasks, including but not limited to assisting with the assessment, development, installation, implementation, commissioning, monitoring, and maintenance of custom control systems in heavy industrial or manufacturing facilities.

Responsibilities

Perform various automation controls design tasks including understanding, use, and development of automation / control logic, PLC programs, and graphics for HMI, electrical schematics, P&ID diagrams, and wiring diagrams.

Design and program industrial control systems (ICS) including PLCs, remote I / O, RTUs, and HMI components.

Collaborate with project teams (electrical engineers, control system programmers, information system programmers, manufacturing representatives, suppliers, purchasers, and client representatives) to design, develop, manufacture, install, and deliver integrated automation controls solutions and processes.

Assist with management of the mechanical portion of projects to meet client budgets, contract fees, goals, objectives, and deadlines.

Provide check-out, operational testing, commissioning, start-up, and calibration of controls systems at customer sites, coordinating with building commissioning services as appropriate.

Provide assessments, troubleshooting, maintenance, redesign, and end-user training to help clients achieve equipment utilization and operational goals.

Recommend equipment operational parameters, technical specifications, calibration requirements, and spare parts recommendations.

Prepare, review, and update Standard Operating Procedures for automated equipment and systems.

Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and Clark Nexsen’s quality control policies and procedures.

Perform construction phase services including representing the firm on-site, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing as-builts as directed.

Work with, respond to, and take direction from project managers, PICs, Operations Directors, and Senior Management.

May act as a lead or first-level supervisor when necessary and travel as required.

Required Skills

Perform conceptual studies, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, instrument selection, and control panel design with minimal direction.

Coordinate and commission all aspects of industrial controls design and installation as requested by the Design Manager or Project Engineer.

Develop project schematic designs, design development designs, and construction documents.

Comply with quality control policies and procedures.

Provide support during bidding processes as needed.

Perform construction phase services including representing the firm on-site, answering RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing as-builts as directed.

Work with and respond to guidance from senior engineers and project managers.

Possess excellent communication skills and a client-oriented attitude with a dedication to high professional service.

Demonstrate technical precision, creative design skills, and the ability to work with a high degree of latitude on complex issues.

Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring as needed.

Be able to work under minimal supervision, referring only the most complex issues to higher-level staff.

Required Experience

A high school diploma or GED is required, with 7–18 years of specific project experience in the design and installation, including start-up and commissioning of automation controls systems, and knowledge of applicable codes / standards.

An Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Advanced Degree in automation controls or a related field, or a related certificate, is preferable.

Experience in Automation Controls design for design-build projects or DOD / military facilities is a plus.

Membership in ISA (International Society of Automation) is desirable.

Certifications such as CAP, CCST, CIMM, NICET (Industrial Instrumentation) are desirable.

Ability to effectively utilize company software (word processing, email, accounting, information management) and familiarity with design and production software to understand capabilities and interact with support staff.

Proficiency with software including MS Office, Outlook, Visual Basic, Rockwell RSLogix, Siemens Step 7, HMI / PLC software, CIP-based and Modbus protocols, AutoCAD, Autodesk Plant Design Suite, Revit, and other BIM / 3D modeling tools.

We prioritize a healthy work / life balance and offer a flexible hybrid schedule. The selected candidate is expected to work in a JMT office location at least three days per week or as needed to perform duties. The role may involve standing, walking, bending and lifting of minimal weight. The office environment is comfortable and suitable for the work performed.
