Phlebotomist

Position Purpose :

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture to obtain blood samples for laboratory testing. This position ensures proper patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, and handling to maintain specimen integrity and patient safety. The Phlebotomist interacts with patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory staff to deliver high-quality care and support the diagnostic process.

Principal Responsibilities :

• Perform venipuncture accurately and efficiently to collect blood samples from patients in accord with standardized protocols and procedures.
• Ensure proper identification of patients and specimens to maintain accuracy and prevent errors.
• Label and handle specimens according to established protocols and laboratory standards.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper disposal of used needles and other materials.
• Interact with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, addressing their concerns and ensuring a positive experience.
• Follow infection control and safety procedures to protect patients, staff, and oneself from potential hazards.
• Maintain accurate records of all specimens collected and ensure timely data entry into the laboratory information system.
• Assist with inventory management and ordering of supplies as needed.
• Stay updated with the latest phlebotomy techniques, protocols, and best practices through continuing education and training.
• Collaborate with healthcare providers and laboratory staff to ensure efficient workflow and quality patient care.
• Assist in providing patient referrals and maintaining a logbook.
• Assist the medical staff during the exam.
• Collect and input data for billing and reporting purposes.
• Participate in JWCH's customer service training called AIDET on an annual basis.

Demonstrate an understanding of AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, and Thank You) to apply in patient encounters or team discussions.
