Northrop Grumman, Space Systems, is seeking a Research Scientist Manager 2 to lead our Metals and Case team. The position will be supporting the Propulsion Systems Division at our facility located in Promontory, UT.
Role Description & Responsibilities :
- Individual contributor and manager of a group of about 10 material specialists and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in metals and case materials
- Provide technical leadership in metallurgy and / or composite case materials
- Ensure team supports both near-term production needs and long-term growth efforts
- Ensure proper support for a variety of customers (internal and external)
- Grow and develop technical knowledge and depth within the group
Job Duties :
Contribute directly to the support of program technical needs in metals and / or case materials related issuesDirect engineering methodology and maintenance tasks for the metals and case teamCoordinate Team tasks, budgets, and schedules with program managers, IR&D leadership, project engineers, and others in PSProvide leadership support to the building management of the M-124 metals labOversee Team member workloads and task progression and completionMentor Team members in personal growth and career developmentLead and document periodic formal and informal performance reviews and determine merits and promotionsReview and update standard work requirements and guidelinesDetermine staffing requirementsSupport initiatives of engineering leadershipBasic Qualifications :
B.S. degree in an engineering or science discipline and 8 years experience, M.S. degree in an engineering or science discipline with 6 years experience, or a PhD. Degree in an engineering or science discipline and 4 years experience.Strong understanding of rocket motor design, manufacture, and testingPrevious metallurgy or composite case experience - 3 years minimumStrong knowledge of and experience with production program requirementsExcellent people and technical management skillsExperience in conducting / supporting technical reviewsStrong knowledge of and ability to facilitate and coordinate work across multiple programsStrong problem-solving skillsExcellent written and oral communication skillsWorking knowledge and / or experience across multiple engineering disciplines and their interactionsExcellent communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to interface with all levels of employees, management, and customersPrior experience guiding and mentoring lower-level engineers and scientistsMust be a U.S. Citizen.Preferred Qualifications :
Strong understanding of testing involved with rocket motor materials, especially metals and compositesPrevious lab and / or production experience with metals or compositesPrevious experience with IRAD compliance requirementsPrevious experience of achieving work through othersPrevious experience working through interpersonal conflictExperience generating Basis of Estimates (BOEs) for new work scope, and managing costs to an established budgetExperience presenting to senior leadershipProven leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skillsExperience with anomaly investigations identifying cause and corrective actionsAbility to obtain and maintain a security clearance
