Job Duties :

The Writing Center is seeking student writing consultants who will take an active interest in the success of the center and :

  • be willing to learn and grow as a writer, student, and peer consultant
  • attend mandatory training
  • accurately, securely collect student report forms for sessions
  • greet and welcome students to the virtual Writing Center
  • meet with students for 30- or 60-minute sessions in person and online
  • read and assess student writing at any stage in the writing process
  • provide helpful feedback and insight to writers
  • document canceled or no-show appointments
  • schedule student sessions as needed
  • assist with administrative duties as requested
  • assist in outreach for university events
  • work with peers to identify needs and build ongoing training

Minimum Qualifications :

Applicants should be registered undergraduate or graduate students with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA who have completed ENGL 1301. Additionally, applicants should :

  • communicate effectively
  • have excellent writing skills, both with lower order and higher order concerns (grammar & mechanics / organization, development, style, etc.)
  • have strong critical reading skills
  • be punctual, organized, and efficient
  • be outgoing and open to working with a students from a variety of disciplines
  • have strong interpersonal skills
  • be malleable and willing to receive feedback
  • have familiarity with Microsoft Office, apps, and other basic computer skills
  • have a strong sense of ethics
  • be able to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • be curious and eager to learn more about writing across the disciplines
  • maintain a professional demeanor
  • uphold policies of the Writing Center
  • uphold privacy policies of Lamar University
  • Physical Requirements :

    Sedentary, sitting most of the time, but must able to walk to various departments around campus. Essential functions or requirements listed above may not include all related duties that might be requested and / or performed. Must be able to lift 20 lbs.

    Work Hours :

    The Writing Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We can create a schedule around your courses.
