The Position
East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) invites qualified applicants to apply for a Wastewater Control Representative position in the Wastewater Environmental Services Division. This position plays a central role in implementing federal, state, regional, and local pretreatment and pollution prevention requirements that protect community sewers, the wastewater treatment plant, and San Francisco Bay.
This recruitment will fill a full-time vacancy within the Source Control Section. Wastewater Control Representatives in the Source Control Section work closely with industrial and commercial customers to evaluate facility processes, develop or update wastewater discharge permit requirements, determine the types of wastes appropriate for discharge to the community sewer, and identify emerging pollutants of concern. Representatives analyze monitoring data, review technical reports, coordinate follow-up on regulatory issues, and prepare written documentation to support compliance oversight. They collaborate extensively with businesses, technical experts, local agencies, and internal EBMUD staff to ensure adherence to regulations and to support broader pollution prevention initiatives.
The list created from this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies within the Environmental Services Division, including Wastewater Control Representative positions within the Regional Private Sewer Lateral (PSL) Section. PSL-related duties may include coordinating with property owners, contractors, HOAs, commercial parcel groups, and City Inspectors to support compliance under the Regional PSL Ordinance and the federal Wet Weather Consent Decree; assisting with program data management; and supporting customer outreach and education efforts.

The salary range is $10,030 per month increasing to $10,532, $11,059, $11,612 and $12,193 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

Requirements
1. A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science or closely related field; AND
2a. Two years of experience involving the inspection, investigation and evaluation of wastewater processes and discharges; OR
2b. Two years of equivalent experience in administering regulations or best management practices in industrial, commercial and residential pollution prevention, pretreatment or environmental compliance.
3. Possession of a California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

The Selection Process
1. Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4 : 30 p.m., Friday, December 12, 2025. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.
2. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
3. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates receiving a passing score to be invited to a panel interview scheduled for January 2026.
4. Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
5. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
6. All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
