Lead Custodian (EDU)

Definition

This is a 2nd shift position (5 : 00 pm - 2 : 00 am)

Under general supervision of the Custodial Supervisor performs a variety of cleaning and custodial activities and oversees the day-to-day custodial work activities for assigned Education facilities. Supervises assigns and monitors work activities for a variety of cleaning maintenance and minor repairs for Community facilities. This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt and considered a DRIVING position subject to working on call and weekend hours.

Distinguishing Features : The Lead Custodian (EDU) is a driving position and requires a GED. This position will provide custodial services and manage custodial staff in Education facilities during regular school hours and therefore is required to pass an extensive background and fingerprint clearance.

Examples of Tasks

Tasks :

1. Act as Lead Custodian for custodial staff in Education facilities as assigned by the Custodial Supervisor. Plans and assigns daily work activities to subordinate workers. Reviews work in progress and ensures tasks are completed within assigned timeframes and in accordance with established standards guidelines and procedures. Trains new / less experienced workers in procedures / techniques for completion of all assigned tasks. Monitors staff performance and keeps Custodial Supervisor informed of issues and concerns. Aids the Custodial Supervisor with conducting timely performance evaluations for assigned custodial staff.

2. Performs and monitors a variety of general cleaning tasks including vacuuming and steam cleaning carpets scrubbing mopping floors stripping waxing and polishing floors washing windows and equipment dusting and polishing furniture and cleaning / sanitizing restroom facilities.

3. Oversees the mixing of cleaning chemicals and solvents. Ensures that workers are trained on proper methods / procedures for mixing cleaning materials and the hazards associated with improper use.

4. Maintains an inventory of cleaning equipment tools supplies and materials at the assigned facility. Picks up and delivers items for other staff including supplies and materials.

5. Responds to emergency situations and performs other tasks and special assignments as assigned.

6. Performs other job-related duties that enhance and facilitate departmental operations.

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics :

• Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of employee supervision and training.
• Knowledge of equipment and supplies used for cleaning work.
• Knowledge of general maintenance methods and practices including floor stripping and waxing.
• Knowledge of equipment use and maintenance.
• Knowledge of general custodial building maintenance methods and practices.
• Skill in planning scheduling and assigning the work of subordinate workers to ensure assignments are completed in accordance with established standards in a safe and timely manner.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
• Skill in following oral and written instructions.
• Skill in operating a motor vehicle.
• Ability to move objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
• Ability to climb ladders or steps and bend or stoop repeatedly or continually.
• Ability to use and train staff to work safely with cleaning equipment supplies chemicals and solvents.
