Job Description Summary

The purpose of this job is to inspect construction methods of utility, transportation, and other engineering projects. Administers contracts and construction plans for engineering improvement and rehabilitation projects. Ensures projects conform to specifications, construction methods, and regulations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Inspects methods and materials used by contractors, ensuring conformity with project designs, plans, regulations, policies, and specifications.
  • Administers contracts and construction plans for engineering improvement and rehabilitation projects.
  • Enters and maintains data, including pay estimates, field reports, and as-built drawings.
  • Communicates with public concerning neighborhood construction projects.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No supervisory authority. Work may require providing guidance and training to others.

  • May assist in the collection of data in support of recommendations for departmental budget allocations. May monitor division or program / promotional level budget and expenditures.
  • Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered Education and Experience

  • Associate’s Degree or 2 years of college in Civil Technologies, Construction Management, Engineering, Drafting or related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position Knowledge of :

  • Construction standards, inspection methods, and materials, tools, and equipment of building trades.
  • Applicable standards and regulations pertaining to projects.
  • Basic arithmetic and computational operations.
  • Principles, practices, and methods of civil engineering, including land surveying and mapping.
  • Auto CAD and GIS software.
  • GPS data collection instruments and software.
  • Skill in :

  • Typing and / or data entry with minimal errors.
  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Maintaining accurate technical records and creating project reports.
  • Ability to :

  • Recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Work independently.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Work from blueprints, plans, and sketches.
  • Use hand tools.
  • Provide high levels of effective customer service.
  • Regularly use a computer, software, phone and related office equipment.

  • Incumbents required to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, talk, hear, drive, reach with hands / arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb / balance.
  • Incumbents required to walk long distances in various terrain while inspecting and collecting data.
