Position Overview
The City of Springfield is seeking to fill a Communications Coordinator position. This role actively designs and presents information to increase awareness and understanding of the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission’s (MWMC) mission to protect the community’s health and environment by providing high‑quality wastewater services to the Eugene‑Springfield metropolitan area in partnership with the cities of Eugene and Springfield, and Lane County. The position may also perform work for the City of Springfield’s stormwater program, along with other services provided by the City’s Development and Public Works Department.
Responsibilities
Using a variety of communication tactics such as presentations, tours, social media, websites, news releases, videos, events, media relations, flyers, handouts, and other materials, this position will promote and inform community members about the MWMC’s Mission, Vision and Values, as well as associated changes in regulations, policies, services, and programs.
Qualifications
Passion for clean water and ability to communicate complex and technical information to a variety of audiences—from school‑age children to adults.
Basic knowledge of the regulatory nature of environmental issues.
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, communications, journalism, education, or a related field.
0–2 years of experience creating public or educational materials, or community outreach, and / or 2–5 years of progressively responsible experience in public relations, marketing, communications, education, or public involvement programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in strategic communications and media planning.
Experience delivering education programs or community events.
Experience engaging traditionally marginalized communities.
Knowledge of environmental resource management issues.
Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.
Spanish language proficiency.
Previous public sector experience.
Licenses & Certifications
Valid Oregon driver’s license by time of appointment.
Selection and Interview Process
Top candidates will be invited to interview, and finalists will be asked to submit 3–5 work product samples (e.g., brochures, newsletters, flyers, news releases, public service announcements, curriculum outlines, web pages). Finalists will also provide the names and email addresses of up to five professional references (including two managers). Reference checks and a criminal background check are part of the selection process. All testing and selection processes will be done in accordance with the Oregon Veterans’ Preference in Public Employment Law.
