Job Specifications

The City of Tallahassee’s Electric Utility team is looking for a skilled and motivated System Operator to help keep our community powered and protected. In this high-impact role, you’ll be at the heart of Tallahassee’s power system—monitoring the electrical grid, responding to emergencies, and making decisions that keep homes, businesses, and critical services reliably connected.

What You Will Do :

  • Monitor Tallahassee’s electrical system around the clock to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operations.
  • Respond quickly to unexpected events, protect equipment and people, and restore stability with confidence.
  • Manage energy flow, coordinate with statewide utilities, and make sure supply always meets demand.
  • Use advanced systems (SCADA, OASIS, FTMS) to track real-time data, process energy transactions, and keep the grid efficient.
  • Maintain NERC certification, stay up to date with industry standards, and expand your knowledge through continuous training.
  • Support customers by assisting with outage concerns, coordinating repairs, and helping prioritize restoration to keep Tallahassee bright and connected.

Minimum Training & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED; and
  • At least four (4) years of experience that includes electric utility generation, transmission, or distribution system operation
  • Necessary Special Requirements

  • Must obtain NERC System Operator certification (BITO or preferred RC) within 9 months of hire, be approved for Independent Operations on the City’s Electric System, and maintain certification throughout employment.
  • Must meet NERC and FRCC requirements, including clear communication in English (oral and written) and the ability to distinguish between red and green.
  • Classified as essential personnel during storms and emergencies; must be able to work extended 16-hour shifts and remain on duty away from family if required.
  • Must be available for on-call duty to meet operational needs.
  • Must be able to work rotating 12-hour shifts covering 24 / 7 operations.
  • Must hold a valid Class E (or equivalent) driver’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain clearance for unescorted access to the Electric Control Center, including identity verification and a criminal history screening.
  • Salary Range

    27.9700 to $75.8988 / hourly. Hiring rate generally will not exceed $60.4163 / hour
