Position Summary :
The Animal-Assisted Intervention and Facility Dog Program Specialist leads Craig Hospital’s comprehensive animal-assisted intervention (AAI) and facility dog services on campus and in the community. This role integrates animal-assisted intervention into patient care as part of the rehabilitation team, developing patient-centered goals that support recovery, well-being, and family engagement. The Specialist also oversees the volunteer AAI program and drives the growth of facility dog services, ensuring safe, compassionate practice and strong collaboration across disciplines.
Position Requirements :
- Licensure / Certification / Registrations : Current BLS for the Health Care Provider certification from the American Heart Association required. A Colorado driver's license is in good standing and insurable.
- Education : Minimum Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. Preferred degree in a healthcare or health-care related field. Minor in AAI, similar certification / training or previous related professional experience preferred.
- Experience : 1–3 years experience working with Brain Injury and / or Spinal Cord injured patients strongly preferred.
- Skills & Abilities : Excellent organization and customer service skills. Ability to successfully handle multiple priorities and prioritize and schedule according to forecast workloads. Must be able to successfully and effectively communicate with a variety of personnel. Ability to teach subject matter to others, or train others through explanation, demonstration, and supervised practice or make recommendations on the basis of technical disciplines. Ability to use proper body mechanics, tools, or special devices to work, move, guide, or place patients, objects or other equipment safely. Skilled in safe and prudent operation of hospital vehicles (small vans, 15 passenger buses). Requires proficiency in Microsoft Office, writing and problem-solving skills. Must be able to operate standard office equipment.
Essential Functions :
Program Management : Lead, manage, and expand the Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI) and Facility Dog Program within the neuro-rehabilitation center. Develop and implement program policies, procedures, and safety protocols. Monitor and report program outcomes, metrics, and compliance with hospital standards and best practices.Facility Dog Oversight : Serve as the primary handler or designate and train alternate handlers. Ensure the dog’s daily care, health, enrichment, and rest. Apply knowledge of animal behavior, welfare, and safe handling in all interactions.Therapeutic Integration : Collaborate with the treatment team to incorporate AAI and facility dog services into patient care plans.Educate staff, patients, and families on the therapeutic role of the facility dog, including boundaries and safe practices.Actively engage with patients during multidisciplinary therapy sessions (PT, OT, SLP, RT etc.) to support rehabilitation goals.Provide services essential to the safety and well-being of patients, including, but not limited to, behavior management, respiratory needs, maintenance of catheter materials and performing or assisting with weight shifts.Secure and maintain department equipment and materials properly utilizing and storing them. Request and procure supplies and services essential to department operation.Provide treatment to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and adapt the plan of treatment accordingly.Document patients' evaluation results, progress towards goals, treatment plan, and recommendations in compliance with documentation requirements of the department and hospitalThis job description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties. Pay Range : $23.80 / Hour — $34.28 / Hour
