Position Summary :
The Medical Physicist is responsible for all technical aspects of medical physics duties pertaining to operating a proton therapy (PT) clinic. This position ensures a safe environment for staff and accurate delivery of radiation to patients as directed by Physician Written Directives. This includes complex treatment planning, patient positioning, radiation protection, machine, and patient-specific quality assurance in close collaboration with Physicians, Therapists, and Dosimetrists. The candidate also has opportunities to participate in research projects related to proton FLASH therapy with pre-clinical experiments, radiobiology-guided PT, and adaptive PT.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Ensure patient safety and staff safety for all radiation services and adhere to safety protocols as appropriate and required federal / state regulations and accrediting agencies and maintain records appropriately
- Provide calibration, QA, and maintenance of radiation therapy equipment and maintain records appropriately
- Performs and documents initial and weekly patient chart checks, as assigned, to verify accuracy
- Perform special physics consults and dosimetry as requested by the radiation oncologist.
- Participate in chart rounds and continue quality improvement
- Performs patient-specific radiation measurements and calculations
- Participates in research, development projects, and medical physics education program
- Performs duties in a manner to promote quality patient care and customer service / satisfaction, while promoting safety, cost efficiency, and a commitment to the continuous quality improvement process
- Comply with all New York Proton Center policies related to Privacy Rules established under the Health Information Privacy and Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
- Perform other job-related duties, as assigned
Qualifications :
Master or Ph.D. Degree in Physics, Health Physics, Radiological Physics, Biophysics or Medical PhysicsBoard eligible or certified by the American Board of Radiology or the American College of Medical PhysicsEligible or licensed with New York State License as Therapeutic Radiological PhysicsStrong technical problem-solving skillsStrong oral and written communication skillsAbility to manage time and prioritize workflowAbility to work flexible hours as neededTwo to five years’ recent experience with Proton radiation therapy preferredKnowledge of Electronic Medical Records and TPS, such as Aria and Eclipse preferred
