The Assistant Principal of Academics (APA) serves as a senior instructional leader of either the lower or upper school, ensuring that every classroom facilitates rigorous, engaging, and equitable instruction. Rooted in Carmen's core values of empathy, belief, and growth, the APA coaches teachers and instructional leaders, manages academic systems, and leads data-driven cycles that drive measurable student achievement. This role is designed for a leader who believes that excellent schools are built through intentional coaching, consistent systems, and collective growthand who is eager to lead both teachers and leaders toward driving outcomes for students. The APA is a member of the campus leadership team.
Salary Range : $71,500 - $86,821 Location : Carmen High School of Science and Technology, Southgate
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in education or related field; master's degree preferred
- Principal's licensure required, or eligibility for such licensure
- Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction teacher and administrator licenses or eligibility
- Minimum 3-5 years teaching experience with a minimum 1 year in full-time leadership role
- Proven track record of improving student outcomes through data-driven leadership.
- Deep knowledge of standards-based instruction, assessment, and adult learning.
- Excellent communication, relationship-building, and change management skills.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple priorities with excellence.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
Lead the implementation of high-quality instruction aligned to Carmen's Arc of the Year framework.Conduct frequent classroom observations and provide actionable, high-impact feedback.Partner with the Principal and Network Teaching & Learning Team to plan and facilitate weekly data meetings, professional development, and collaborative planning.Ensure curriculum alignment, pacing, and fidelity to Carmen's adopted high-quality instructional materials (HQIM).Model strong instructional coaching through real-time feedback, co-planning, and practice clinics.Leader and Teacher Development
Manage, coach and develop Deans of Curriculum & Instruction (DOCIs) to strengthen instructional leadership.Conduct weekly 1 : 1s and joint walkthroughs to calibrate coaching, feedback, and data use.Partner with DOCIs to co-lead PD and data-driven reteach cycles.Oversee the Grow coaching platform, ensuring teachers receive weekly observation, feedback, and measurable action steps.Manage, coach, and develop 1-3 teachers and / or teacher leaders toward meeting their performance and development goals.Identify emerging teacher leaders to sustain a strong leadership pipeline.Collaborate with the Principal to ensure performance management processes are implemented with consistency and clarity.Support the Principal with hiring and onboarding of instructional staff.Data-Driven Improvement
Lead analysis of student academic data to identify trends and drive improvement.Own the RTI-A system, ensuring effective identification, progress monitoring, and intervention for students performing below grade level.Monitor student on-track metrics and lead planning to address gaps.Partner with DOCIs and teachers to ensure consistent, meaningful use of data for planning and differentiation.Manage academic dashboards and progress-monitoring systems to ensure accuracy and accountability.Communicate and celebrate progress to staff, students, and families through clear, motivating messaging.Academic Systems
Oversee academic systems that enable strong teaching and learninggradebooks, intervention, assessment cycles, and more.Partner with the Assistant Principal of Operations to ensure testing, coverage, and scheduling logistics support instruction.Collaborate with the Assistant Principal of Culture to align academic and cultural systems that promote student ownership and success.Collaborate with the Assistant Principal of Student Services to ensure accommodations, scaffolding, co-planning, etc. are happening with fidelityCulture & Mission Alignment
In collaboration with the School Leadership Team, execute all school duties and responsibilities in alignment with the Carmen vision, mission, and goals.Model and cultivate Carmen's values of empathy, belief, and growth in every interaction.Foster a reflective, feedback-driven staff culture grounded in equity, excellence, and belonging.Build trusting relationships with students, families, and staff.Engage in difficult conversations and to hold adults and students accountable to values-aligned behaviors, norms, and expectations.Follow through on commitments and focus on results.Participate in other school-related activities and duties, as needed.Work Environment : The position will work predominantly Monday Friday; however, this position will require work on evenings and weekends as necessary.
