The Research Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SPLA) contributes to the research efforts of the Communication Lab in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. The lab specializes in applying precision medicine to create participation-focused interventions that help people meaningfully take part in everyday activities. This role directly supports a federally funded initiative aimed at developing deep phenotypes of communicative participation in adolescents with Down syndrome.

Under the supervision of the lab director and research coordinator, the assistant designs, coordinates, adapts, and administers innovative experimental protocols—including speech, language, and respiratory tasks—to support the active involvement of adolescent participants and their caregivers in the project.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in the planning, designing and formulation, modification and adaptation, and administration of experiments and experimental protocols and procedures for unique data collection systems (, speech sound production sampling and expressive language sampling in multiple contexts using audio / visual equipment, Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT), LabChart, Inductotrace, GoldWave, and PRAAT) in the area of speech, language, and respiratory task experimental data collection for adolescents with developmental disabilities and their caregivers.
  • Applies clinical speech-language expertise, knowledge of communication sciences, and technical expertise to manage, operate, and check complex speech, language, and respiratory equipment, materials, and technologies (such as SALT, GoldWave, Inductotrace, PRAAT, and LabChart) for experimental procedures associated with speech, language, and respiratory research in adolescents with developmental disabilities.
  • Assists lab director and research coordinator to plan, develop, and formulate procedures for research activities that promote participation and inclusivity for adolescents with developmental disabilities and their caregivers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, or related degree.
  • Active Arizona State Speech-Language Pathology Assistant License.
  • One (1) year of relevant work experience is required.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years of relevant work experience.
