Medical Director – Medical Sobering Center

Location : Albuquerque, New Mexico

Employment Type : PRN, Estimated 5–6 hours / week (on the highest end)

We are seeking a mission-driven, community-focused Medical Director to lead medical oversight at a new Medical Sobering Center in Albuquerque, NM. This role is pivotal in shaping policy, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a trauma-informed, harm-reduction care model for individuals experiencing substance use, co-occurring conditions, and acute intoxication.

The Medical Director will provide expert guidance during the design, launch, and stabilization phases, supporting a care model grounded in public health principles and medication-assisted treatment (MAT)-friendly practices.

Compensation

  • Competitive hourly rate, up to $250 / hour , commensurate with experience
  • Contract role

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide medical oversight, including clinical consultation and policy review.
  • Approve and develop clinical standing orders, detoxification protocols, and withdrawal management pathways.
  • Provide consultation on withdrawal management and medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including troubleshooting complex cases with APRNs.
  • Lead the integration of harm reduction strategies, MAT, and evidence-based SUD interventions.
  • Collaborate with the RN Program Manager and interdisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care and smooth referral pathways within the Albuquerque healthcare system.
  • Participate in quarterly case consultations, peer review meetings, and remote consultations as needed.
  • Review and approve staff training content, medical documentation protocols, and EHR workflows.
  • Ensure alignment of medical protocols with state / federal regulations and best practices in trauma-informed care.
  • Time Commitment

  • Ongoing : Approximately 5–6 hours / week
  • Start-Up Phase (Months 1–4) : Increased hours to support staff onboarding, protocol development, and regulatory readiness
  • Center Overview

  • Initial Capacity : 30 beds
  • Target Utilization : 85% by Month 6
  • Future Capacity : Designed for up to 49 beds or recliners
  • Ramp-Up : Four-month phased approach including hiring, training, and facility preparation
  • Training Program : Includes DEI / CLAS, Motivational Interviewing, CPI de-escalation, MAT, and withdrawal scale administration
  • Qualifications

  • MD or DO licensed in New Mexico (or ability to obtain promptly)
  • Board certification in Addiction Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, or Family Medicine with SUD experience
  • Background in harm reduction, low-barrier care, and MAT prescribing strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with triage or sobering center models a plus
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, trauma-informed care, and person-centered approaches
