Under the direction of the Deputy Fire Chief, directs activities and manages abureau which may consist of one or more divisions, battalions and units, or a combination of those. Distinguishing Characteristics : This class differs from the higher class of Deputy Fire Chief in that the latter directs and coordinates the overall activities of the department. It differs from the lower class of FireDivision Chief in that the latter directs and coordinates the activities of a division consisting of one or more battalions. This classification is exempt from civil service.

Under general direction of the Sheriff's Captain in charge of the Sheriff's Aviation / SAR Unit, supervises and schedules flight crews and operates helicopters in the performance of law enforcement, search-and-rescue, medical evacuation, and firefighting activities; and performs related duties as assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics : This classification is distinguished from the Fire / Sheriff's Pilot by its responsibility for evaluating, scheduling, assigning collateral duties to the latter classification.

Serving at the pleasure of the County's Board of Supervisors and under the general administrative direction of the County's Chief Executive Officer, is responsible for the protection of life and property from fire and other phenomena by directing the activities of the Ventura County Fire Protection District. Distinguishing Characteristics : The County Fire Chief is fully and immediately accountable to the County's CEO and ultimately to the Board of Supervisors for the management / administration of the Fire Protection District. This classification is exempt from civil service.

Under the direction of the Fire Chief, directs activities and manages a bureau which may consist of one or more divisions or sections. Assists in planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Ventura County Fire Protection District. Assumes direction of the Department in the absence of the County Fire Chief. Performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics : This class differs from County Fire Chief in that the latter is directly responsible to the Chief Administrative Officer and the Board of Supervisors for the management of the County Fire Protection District. Under direction of a Division Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, or the Fire chief, manages the activities of subordinate safety and non-safety personnel in an assigned battalion. May also manage support functions such as Training, EMS, or Wildland. Distinguishing Characteristics : This classification is distinguished from that of Division Chief in that the latter manages multiple battalions or a staff program or branch within the Fire Protection District. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Fire Captain in that the Fire Captain is typically in charge of a fire station, staff program or work unit with reporting responsibilities to a Battalion Chief.

Under direction of a Fire Battalion Chief, commands and supervises the fire suppression, prevention, training, and maintenance programs of a fire station, or assists with the operations of a staff bureau (i.e., Fire Prevention, Training, Support, Personnel) or assigned program / performs related work as required. Distinguishing Characteristics : This classification is distinguished from that of a Fire Battalion Chief by being responsible for the operation of a fire station or assisting with operations of a staff bureau unit or assigned program rather than being in charge of a battalion, program or section of the department. Distinguishing Characteristics : The Fire Control Worker differs from the Senior Fire Control Worker in that the latter acts as a lead worker and performs tasks requiring additional skills. Both classes are distinguished from others in the maintenance series by the incumbents' exposure to hazardous conditions in fire suppression and participation in a mandatory physical fitness program.

Under the supervision of the Support Captain, directs activities of Fire Control Workers in both emergency and non-emergency situations; assists in administration of the crew programs. Performs other related duties as assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics : This class differs from the Support Captain in that the former has responsibilities for daily and direct supervision for a crew's activities while the latter has responsibility for overall program administration. It differs from any line position in that it has responsibility for supervision of a crew of workers and that it has responsibility for performing duties outside the scope of only fire suppression.

Under the general direction of the Fire Chief or designee, the Fire Department Professional Standards Administrator leads and directs the Fire Department's internal affairs function. This position is responsible for conducting and supervising impartial investigations of misconduct allegations, line-of-duty injuries, and other complaints involving all Fire Department personnel, both sworn and professional staff.
